The
Department of Specialist Services, Specialist Laboratory Medicine
Biochemistry is seeking to recruit a full time B5 BMS's to work as part of a
team covering where the requirements are in Endocrinology, Metabolic,
toxicology, trace metals, Biochemical Genetics, Immunosuppressants and
Screening services at St James site.
We
are a team of Support Workers, Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and
Consultants working to deliver a Specialist Biochemistry service which is one
of the most complex and busiest services in England.
We
have recently implemented the WinPath Enterprise LIMs and ICE requesting.
Main duties of the job
This
post will be a multidisciplinary permanent role within Specialist Services.
This role will support the following sections to support cover when required
in Specialist Endocrinology, Immunosuppressants, Trace Metals, Metabolic,
Toxicology, Biochemical Genetics (inherited metabolic diseases/screening)
services. In addition this post will require support for Saturday morning
Immunosuppressant services.
Main
duties of the job Carry out appropriate technical laboratory procedures and
tasks that are consistent with the post levels of knowledge, skills and
experience. These tasks may vary from day to day but examples
would
include: Carry out analysis
Reporting
results (appropriate to discipline) with appropriate escalation as required
Maintaining
appropriate records and documentation
Plate
reading and reporting
Basic
pipetting
Specialist
reagent set up
Dealing
with telephone results enquires
Work
flexibly and undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as agreed
with line manager
This
job requires a high degree of dexterity and precision when manipulating small
tools such as pipettes, handling very small volumes of samples. In order to
achieve the required turnaround times the work must be performed with both
speed and accuracy.

(Newborn and FASP) screening within Specialist Services, Block 46.
Specialist
services are seeking three enthusiastic and self-motivated- HPC registered
Biomedical Scientists to work in the Specialist Services Lab in Block 46
which is part of the Specialist Laboratory Medicine Department. These posts
are based at St Jamess University Hospital and are at Band 5 roles
(individuals that are awaiting registration portfolio assessment will be
considered).
The first post would be a
multidisciplinary permanent role within Specialist Services. This role will
support the following sections to support cover when required in Specialist
Endocrinology, Immunosuppressants, Trace Metals, Metabolic, Toxicology, Biochemical
Genetics (inherited metabolic diseases/screening) services. This post will
require support for Saturday morning Immunosuppressant services.
The second post is a maternity
cover in the screening laboratory.
This section provides the regional newborn bloodspot screening and
foetal anomaly screening program (FASP) services. The screening lab provides a service for
the nine conditions prescribed by UK Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program for
the West Yorkshire region (approximately 40,000 births a year). Additionally,
it is responsible for a regional FASP service, providing both first and
second trimester biochemical testing and chance reporting for over 20,000
women per year.
You
will be working within well-established teams of staff including HBSWs,
Specialist BMSs and Clinical Scientists. These roles involve working as part
of a small, specialised team, and this is an excellent opportunity to further
develop your skills, knowledge, and experience within a specialised service
area. Duties will include routine operation of HPLC, IEF, TMS, and other
aspects of laboratory analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting of the
Laboratory instrumentation, training other staff, technical validation and
authorisation of the results, stock control and ordering of supplies.
The
post holder will have full training within the relevant section and will
report to the Section leads. It is also expected that they will demonstrate
initiative and possess excellent communication skills as this role will
involve liaison with users of the service. They will be required to hold a
Registration Portfolio in Biochemistry and be registered with the HPC or
awaiting portfolio assessment.
These
roles are for 37.5 hours per week, working hours 08:30 17:00 (flexitime
system in operation).
