Job summary

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Genomic Associate (GA) to join the Yorkshire Regional Genetics Service (YRGS). This role is part of a National Strategy, funded by NHS England, to enhance services for families in high need areas and will link closely with equivalent posts in other areas of high need nationally. The Genomic Associate will help implement culturally competent genetics services for underserved groups, particularly where close relative partnerships/marriages are more common, and will become an expert in this area. This is a new role which we expect to develop over time. The role is initially fixed term until March 2025 but there may be the opportunity of extension, subject to NHSE funding.

Applicants from a range of backgrounds and experiences are welcomed. We are seeking a caring, compassionate individual, with excellent communication and organisational skills and with a flexible approach to provide excellent patient care. It is essential that the post holder is able to manage his/her own workload on a day-to-day basis and prioritise their work to meet deadlines, and an ability to communicate both in English and a relevant language (e.g. Urdu) will be essential.

Main duties of the job

The GA will facilitate the smooth running of the patient information collation service and provide additional clinical and administrative support as required for Clinical Genomics service provision within the YRGS. The GA will help to deliver general and prenatal genetic pathways within Clinical Genetics for patients and families of diverse ethnic groups where close relative partnerships/marriages are more common. The post holder will support clinic appointments, including arranging blood samples, and liaising closely with clinicians and the laboratories to ensure smooth running of patient pathways. The GA will be supervised by Consultant Clinical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors and supported by the patient pathway admin team. The post-holder will be based at YRGS at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds. A full UK driving licence is required, together with access to a car.

About us

YRGS is one of 3 Clinical Genetics Services within the North East & Yorkshire Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (NEY GMSA), and provides Clinical Genetics services to a diverse population of 3.8 million across a large, varied geographical area. The service comprises an experienced team of Consultant Clinical Geneticists, Genetic Counsellors and Genetic Research Nurses/Practitioners, as well as junior doctors and trainee Genetic Counsellors, supported by a large clinical administrative team.

YRGS is based at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds, with the Central Lab of the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub situated at nearby St. Jamess University Hospital. Genetics clinics are held throughout the Yorkshire region, and virtually.
