Job summary

Applications are invited from individuals with an Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) accredited Biomedical Sciences degree for a 1 year fixed term trainee Biomedical Scientist post in the Clinical Immunology laboratory at Leeds General Infirmary. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic with strong team-working skills and will be able to demonstrate a strong work ethic.

Support to complete the IBMS State Registration portfolio will be provided. Previous NHS laboratory experience within Immunology or an automated laboratory environment providing Immunology tests would be an advantage.

Working hours will be Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will work as a trainee to develop the skills listed on the job description, to assist in the delivery of a quality driven, cost effective, patient focused service consistent with LTHT Pathology objectives under the supervision of HCPC registered colleagues.

This will include learning to:

Carry out the examination of pathological samples using various technologies and to report or present the results as appropriate.

Work in different sections of the department to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. You will learn how to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations, and how to work, often under pressure, either independently or as part of the team.

You will learn to communicate information, often related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organisations.

You will be supported to complete the IBMS registration portfolio while working in the laboratory with the aim of achieving HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.

About us

The Pathology Service at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTHT) operates across two large sites (Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James's University Hospital (SJUH) in the Leeds area, serving a population of around 2.3 million people.

The Clinical Immunology Laboratory is a part of this service and provides laboratory support to the wider Yorkshire region and processes around 400,000 requests per year. Tests performed include both automated and more specialised assays. As a department we aim to provide a consistently high quality and professional service to all our users. The successful candidate will join our friendly and hard-working team in the delivery of this service and be involved in the quality aspects of the day to day running of the lab.

The Clinical Immunology laboratory is currently based at Leeds General Infirmary, but will be moving soon to the new purpose-built laboratory facility on the St James' site.
