Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a passion for training and development to join the Pathology CSU Management Team as Pathology Training Manager. This is a fantastic opportunity and gain experience working with the CSU leadership team in Pathology at Leeds, the specialisms within the CSU and external providers of education and training.

This rewarding role offers the exciting opportunity to promote and develop the learning culture within Pathology. The Pathology CSU is going through a time of significant change as we develop a brand-new facility, introduce new regional IT systems and further develop plans to work more effectively with our partners in nearby Trusts. High quality staff training and development is crucial to support these changes.

Ideally the individual will have awareness of, and access to a diverse range of training allows us to offer the best development opportunities for our teams. This rewarding role and is key to coordinating these training opportunities and in promoting the learning culture within Pathology.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities of the post holder:

Work with the Head of Profession, Pathology Training & Development Group and Pathology Quality Lead to facilitate and implement pan-CSU workforce development strategy

Support departmental Training Managers in the development and maintenance of training and competence assessment processes, including the new training and competency system - Profiler Live

Represent Pathology throughout internal and external education and training networks

Develop and secure funding sources to support staff training and development

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The post holder will be responsible for supporting the development of and sourcing funding arrangements for staff educational needs in line with Pathology career development documents and workforce transformation strategy. As part of the Pathology Management team the post holder will lead on the identification and communication of relevant training funding opportunities.

Co-ordinating and managing the funding application process they will help build knowledge within the Pathology CSU to open up to expanding talent pipelines, and support the CSU to grow its own staff along with future needs. They will need to nurture constructive relationships with scientific/clinical staff and other members of the Trust, regional NHS partners, funding bodies and staff working with the University of Leeds and other Higher Education Institutes (HEIs).

The post holder will take a pan-pathology approach to chairing the Pathology CSU Training and Development Group (PTDG) in the development and implementation of training and those assessing staff competency. The post holder will provide training management support to the Pathology Discipline Training Managers, Service and Operational Managers for services that may be delivered from either main site as staff training needs may differ on each site.

The post holder will be responsible as the central point of contact for co-ordinating a range of activities promoting Pathology as a choice of profession: e.g. work experience, placement requests, schools engagement, career events, and apprenticeships.

The post holder will maintain a high level of scientific knowledge of a personal specific discipline, and an appropriate level knowledge of all other areas of pathology, in order to provide information to visitors/host generic events etc.

In order to carry out the job effectively the post holder will be a registered healthcare scientist with the HCPC. In addition they will have extensive experience within their speciality. You will have developed a range of competencies and specialist knowledge within the discipline through extensive practical experience, in house training and structured study and will continue to develop your skills and knowledge subject to the requirements of continuous professional development (CPD).

In addition basic computer skills are essential.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Management

Takes a pan-Pathology approach to the roles and responsibilities of the departmental training coordinators and departmental training groups, through matrix management and objective setting.

Chairs the Pathology CSU Training and Development Group (PTDG) meetings.

Enables the Pathology CSU Training and Development Group (PTDG) in the development and implementation of methods to train those assessing staff competency.

Takes the lead on specific projects.

Communication

Provides highly specialist advice to colleagues, including clinical, technical and junior staff regarding training and educational requirements for their area of scientific expertise.

To communicate highly complex and/or sensitive information to colleagues and other healthcare staff.

Issues written, electronic or verbal reports to colleagues, and other healthcare staff.

Presents information or reports to groups of staff e.g. students and members of the public. May provide feedback to operational managers/CSU leadership team.

Analysis

Analyses, interprets and resolves complex information problems where there is a range of information to be considered.

Forms reasoned judgement and argument, and able to defend a position when challenged.

Systematically appraises all available options considering all factors and implications e.g. interpretation of HCPC, IBMS, NSHSC and UKAS guidance.

Planning

Horizon scanning with relevant external organisations to identify funding and collaborative opportunities.

Formulates plans and strategies, monitoring and contributing to a course of action to address longer term workforce shortages in trained, registered pathology staff.

Recommends new ways of working in order to mitigate the shortfall in trained and registered scientific staff.

Organises engagement events, producing communications or briefing materials, presentations to groups.

Applies specialist knowledge to influence local policy and participates in policy/service development programmes across Pathology.

Interprets and applies national policy, guidance and definitions to local systems and processes.

Proposes and implements changes of approach to own work area (Pathology training) within the Pathology CSU and ownership of relevant training SOPs and documentation.

Finance

Supports the development of and sources funding arrangements for staff educational needs in line with Pathology Careers Development documents and Workforce Transformation Strategy.

Co-ordinates EOIs and applications for funding and training posts.

Responsible for disseminating strategic funding intelligence to Trust staff and provide briefing materials/meeting presentations highlighting scheme or collaboration opportunities.

As Pathology Central Training Manager the post holder will contribute to the monitoring of financial initiatives through the provision of advice and guidance to Trust Pathology teams e.g. the eligibility criteria for specific funding streams/initiatives for training monies.

HR

Takes the lead in identifying training providers HEIs e.g. University of Leeds, local colleges promoting collaborative opportunities and suitable training courses to support the Pathology longer term workforce strategy.

Responsible for co-ordinating work experience and placement requests within Pathology.

Provides access to the training tools required, enabling and supporting staff to in turn, train technical, scientific and clinical staff within their specialism.

Co-ordinates pan-Pathology training and documentation e.g. Pathology Development Calendar.

Co-ordinates schools engagement through local careers events.

Co-ordinates accreditation of the training programmes with IBMS and NSHSC.

Represents Pathology LTHT at regional and national training groups.

Conducts contractual reviews with external training providers.

Signposts trainees to appropriate training and development schemes, apprentice assessment days.
