Job summary
An exciting opportunity to join the Head and Neck specialist nursing team has become available. We are a small, friendly, and proactive team based in Bexley Wing, St Jamess Hospital. We are keyworkers for patients with head and neck cancer and are pivotal in supporting patients at diagnosis, right through to the end of their treatment, whether this is through a curative or palliative pathway.
We are looking for a highly motivated and diligent nurse who can work both independently and as part of a team, who possesses excellent communication skills and is passionate about improving patient experience for head and neck cancer patients.
The jobholder will contribute to the development of the speciality service through audit, education and training. The successful candidate will be offered an induction package, along with opportunities for both personal and professional development. Relevant experience at band 5 level is required.
The post holder will be responsible to the band 7 team leader, our offices are in Bexley Wing SJUH. Some of our wards and clinics are cross site, due to this, the post holder would be required to review patients regularly at the Leeds General Infirmary and the Leeds Dental Institute.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work within the Head and Neck CNS team and be a core member of the Head and Neck MDT. They will be responsiblefor a defined caseload of patients from diagnosis of primary and recurrent Head and Neck cancer to end of treatment providing support management at key points on their journey.
The team works collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team including nurses, surgeons, oncologists, restorative dentists, dietitians and speech therapists. The successful candidate will be present when patients are given a diagnosis of cancer, assist in our face-to-face nurse led clinics in radiotherapy and pre-treatment as well as supporting patients in our consultant led combined and systemic clinics. They will conduct ward visits both to our surgical and non-surgical patients and will troubleshoot patient enquiries requiring specialist advice over the telephone.
Previous experience in head and neck surgery or oncology is desirable. An informal visit to meet the team and understand more about the role of a head and neck CNS is encouraged
