Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and motivated Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist to establish a nurse-led clinic for patients receiving adjuvant breast cancer treatment.

The individual will work to develop and streamline patient pathways and evidence-based clinical protocols, enhancing patient education around systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) for patients with breast cancer, and embedding electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) into everyday practice.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will

Provide expert clinical assessment, toxicity evaluation, and decision-making for patients receiving adjuvant SACT for patients with breast cancer.

Lead a nurse-led clinic offering timely review, symptom management, treatment support, and escalation where required.

Act autonomously within agreed clinical protocols, referring appropriately to oncologists or acute services.

Support safe prescribing (if an independent prescriber) or contribute to prescribing decisions within the MDT.

Job responsibilities

The Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will establish and evaluate a nurse-led clinic for patients undergoing adjuvant breast cancer treatment. The role focuses on improving patient experience, safety, and outcomes by developing robust patient pathways, implementing evidence-based protocols, enhancing patient education for systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), and integrating electronic patient-reported outcome measures (ePROMs) into routine practice

The post holder will be practising as an independent specialist clinical practitioner providing patient-centred and evidence-based clinical care, within an agreed scope of competence and practice. The jobholder is responsible for the management of a defined caseload. The jobholder carries continuing responsibility for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care and the setting of standards of care.

The jobholder will provide specialist nursing care, treatment and advice to a specific patient group and will contribute to the development of the speciality service. The jobholder will ensure cost effective use of resources. The job holder will support the development of interdisciplinary and whole service working. As a role model they will promote the sharing of good practice and delivery of high quality, effective and efficient care. The job holder will provide training and education to staff groups, patients and families/carers.

The post holder will work in partnership with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to implement and improve the patient pathway and will be expected to develop new skills to further enhance the quality of the service delivered. Where appropriate, the role will include the day to day leadership and management.

. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Leadership

Provide leadership to the clinical team working with Matron, develop new roles/ways of working

Provide a visible clinical lead and role model to the nursing and wider team by delivering high quality compassionate care.

Support staff to provide efficient, effective, safe and quality care to patients as an expert practitioner.

Deliver a positive patient experience.

Support in the delivery of an effective, evidence based, safe, quality service within budgetary envelope.

Responsible for the day to day supervision of junior clinical staff and students within the specialist team.

Motivate staff in the delivery of quality patient care.

Has responsibility for the line management of the specialist nursing team including recruitment, performance management and workforce planning.

Deliver an effective quality service with budgetary constraints, monitors the delegated budget for the specialist nursing teamwork with the Matron to work towards the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals objectives and service improvement.

Supervise clinical delivery of care competencies.

Anticipate problems and take preventative or mitigating actions, or have contingency plans available.

Investigate and respond to accidents, complaints, untoward incidents and other significant events.

Ensures that workload and performance monitoring data for the team is collected, collated and utilised to ensure the effective and efficient working of the team. Reviews this information with Matron on a regular basis.

Work with the Matron in the development of specific elements of nursing practice, reflecting the CSU and Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals business plans.

Engage users and carers views on service delivery and development.

Propose, develop and implement policy, protocols and practice guidelines specific to the clinical specialty.

Exercises a personal duty of care in relation to equipment, resource and stock control utilising equipment and supplies appropriately.

Clinical

Provide high quality care as an expert practitioner and act as a role model and resource for advice, support and guidance.

Provides specialised advice contributing to the diagnosis and care of patients.

Where appropriate to the services patient demographic, to developmentally appropriate, young person friendly healthcare to support young people; including support for transition, as they move from childrens into adult services between the ages 11-25 years.

Responsibility for ensuring setting, monitoring and seeking to continuously improve standards and the quality of patient care.

Undertake clinical procedures where dexterity and accuracy are required.

Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care and treatments using specialist clinical knowledge and clinical skills.

Make clinical assessments and treatment decisions within clearly defined policies and protocols.

Organises own clinical workload.
