Job summary

We are looking for a talented and dynamic individual to join the team within the Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) in Leeds. This is an opportunity to become part of a highly successful department with extensive facilities and high levels of scientific expertise. The post holder will undergo an AHCS equivalence training programme, with a time limited and performance monitored 3 year training contract, predominantly delivered via HMDS, with the expectation that HCPC registration will be gained as a Clinical Scientist in Haematology. On registration the post holder will automatically move to a band 7 permanent position.

The post holder will be focused in the flow cytometry section of the department and will work alongside laboratory based Biomedical Scientists, other advanced Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and Consultant Haematologist/Haematopathologists to maintain and develop the service.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of this role is to contribute to the development and delivery of a high-quality diagnostic service. The successful candidate will be required to

integrate with the diagnostic team to deliver a proportion of the diagnostic workload

manage a referral workload, a service or small group of services on a rotational basis (under supervision)

ensure the best possible standard of work by applying scientific skills and expertise to maintain a high level of quality, reliability, timeliness and accuracy

be personally responsible for their own training and records, subject to the supervision/direction of the Training Officer or other designated senior staff

take part in regular planning and review of training objectives, as outlined in the training programme to ensure completion of training milestones

Organise and prioritise their own working schedule. The post holder must be able to respond to urgent workload pressures and thus ensure the delivery of test results in a timely manner.

HMDS is an internationally renowned specialist service for the diagnosis of blood cancers and is the largest of its type in the United Kingdom with a high throughput of specimens including peripheral blood, bone marrow and tissue biopsies. We have an international reputation for excellence in specialist diagnostics. HMDS is part of the central laboratory responsible for delivering the high throughput service for the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub. The department also has a strong research programme and there will also be opportunity to be involved in projects related to research and clinical trials.

This will involve a period of rotation through scientific sections in the laboratory and potentially undertaking a research and development project. The post holder will participate in continuing training to acquire, improve and apply the requisite skills and knowledge necessary for Registration as a Clinical Scientist.

The post holder will have appropriate scientific duties and responsibilities to contribute to the provision and development of an effective and high quality diagnostic service.

The post holder will be required to work in a number of different service areas to achieve experience of, and assist with, the full range of procedures undertaken, and to ensure a broad range of training is covered

Other specific duties will depend on the section to which the post holder is allocated.

The post holder will be personally responsible for their own training and records, subject to the supervision and direction of the Training Officer or other designated senior staff. During the course of the training programme he/she will also be involved in developing and monitoring the outcome of medium-term service improvement schemes both with and without scientific and technical support.

Take part in regular planning and review of training objectives, as outlined in the training programme to ensure completion of training milestones.

Maintain awareness of, and adhere to, all relevant codes of practice, Health & Safety procedures and operational policies, and inform the safety officer of any hazards or potential risks encountered.

Receive, process and analyse samples submitted to the department, employing relevant procedures and providing an accurate interpretation of the results obtained.

Confer with the supervisors to assess the suitability of samples, the priority to be accorded to them and the appropriateness of tests to be undertaken

Undertake a proportion of the workload of the laboratory, maintaining an appropriate quality of work by mutual agreement with the training supervisor.

Maintain an accurate record of work undertaken, including both manual and computerized databases.

Implement the correct procedure for reporting results, referring each case to an appropriate trainer or registered clinical scientist, for independent checking, assessment of quality and accuracy of interpretation.

Participate in quality control procedures.

Ensure the best possible standard of work by applying scientific skills and expertise to maintain a high level of quality, reliability, timeliness and accuracy.

Contribute information, both written and verbal, to local and national scientific meetings and workshops.

Undertake additional training by secondment to another laboratory if required to meet training requirements.
