An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse to join the breast care team based at St James Hospital. The successful candidate will support patients and their families who have or fear they may have breast cancer. Support is formally offered from initial diagnosis and throughout treatment, including diagnosis of breast cancer recurrence both locally and metastatic, up to end of treatment.
You will be an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team working closely other specialities both professional and voluntary, so you will need to have excellent communication skills with an ability to establish good working relationships with all, especially patients and their families.
You will part of a breast care nursing team able to work harmoniously within that team as well as autonomously, prioritising your own workload. Some of that work is group directed so you need to be able to talk in front of and with groups of patients and relatives requiring effective presentation, facilitative and information giving skills.
There is a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills needed within this role, a willingness to learn from and receive constructive feedback is essential. You will be supported with a personalised induction programme and once trained you will be working autonomously but support.
Main duties of the job
You will be supported by a mentor and the team leader and will undergo a personalised induction programme to familiarise yourself with the role and to provide training/support as needed.
You will work with the rest of the breast care nursing team helping them to manage a specific caseload of patients, supporting them throughout their journey.
Once trained and you are confident you will work within the breast care nursing team and alongside the wider breast MDT. You will be responsible for a defined caseload of patients from diagnosis of primary and secondary breast cancer to end of treatment providing support and education at key points on their journey.
