Job summary
We
have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and motivated person to lead
our mechanical engineering team in Radiotherapy Technology Services (RTS) at
Bexley Wing, St. James's Hospital, Leeds .
Working
collaboratively with clinical and scientific staff, you will be supporting
the clinical radiotherapy service to treat patients though the safe and
effective repair and maintenance of medical equipment including 12 Elekta
VersaHD linacs, 3 Philips Brilliance Big Bore CT Simulators, a Flexitron
remote afterloading unit, Gamma Knife ICON, and MR simulator.
In
addition to this wide variety of equipment, your creativity and experience in
managing medical devices will serve you well as you work closely with the
advanced practitioner and join our multidisciplinary project teams in a lead
role to provide mechanical engineering expertise in the design and
development of novel medical and non-medical devices to solve the unique
challenges faced in delivering high quality care in radiotherapy and beyond.

Main duties of the job
The
main duties of the role include:

Leading, motivating, and developing a team of five clinical technologists.
-
Ensuring that design, development, manufacture, and modification of devices
within the section are carried out within the relevant quality and
legislative frameworks.
-
Collaborating with technologists, clinical, and scientific staff to support
the implementation of innovative engineering solutions to support the
continuous improvement of oncology services.
-
Leading in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of radiotherapy
pre-treatment and treatment delivery systems.
-
Allocating resource to service requests and projects.
-
Training others in equipment management and mechanical engineering skills for
use in a healthcare science environment.
The
post holder will provide project management and technical leadership skills
though the demonstration of a high level of understanding of Medical Devices
Regulations, the application of risk management to medical devices, and
managing the risk associated with bringing custom-made treatment devices into
clinical use.

Technology Services (RTS) is a group within the Radiotherapy Physics section
of the Department of Medical Physics and Engineering at the Leeds Teaching
Hospitals NHS Trust. RTS staff
collaborate with clinical and scientific users of radiotherapy equipment to
provide equipment management and related technical services.
The
four teams in RTS; Clinical Computing, Electronics, Mechanical Engineering
and Technical Services, collaborate to carry out activity in
multidisciplinary workgroups.

The
jobholder plays a vital role in managing and providing technical support for
radiotherapy equipment using specialist knowledge of mechanical engineering
and device design and development, often leading teams and making high-impact
decisions independently. They oversee complex and high-value medical
equipment, with a focus on quality assurance and clinical risk management.
The
successful applicant will have substantial experience working in a medical
engineering environment backed up with formal clinical technology training.
The successful applicant will also be registered (or be in a position to
achieve registration within one year) as a clinical technologist, a
healthcare scientist, or healthcare science practitioner. Unregistered
applicants may be appointed under trainee pay arrangements until registration
has been achieved.
