JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

The acute oncology nurse practitioner is a challenging role requiring the skills of an experienced nurse with oncology/ haematology experience. Key aspects to this role include the triage and assessment of acutely unwell oncology patients, the day to day running of the oncology assessment area and safe patient placement within the Leeds Cancer Centre.

The nurse practitioner needs to be able to prioritise their own workload, have a good understanding of this specialty, have excellent communication skills and be able to work within a team effectively. They must be able to demonstrate good leadership skills and have the necessary drive and enthusiasm to move practice forward, to deliver education to junior staff and to act as a role model. There is scope for this practitioner to develop extended skills in patient assessment and non-medical prescribing.

The jobholder will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team members of the acute oncology team to support the acute oncology service within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.

The jobholder will help lead and support the acute oncology assessment unit. The jobholder will act as first point of contact for all nursing and medical issues within the department and out of hospital enquiries to the acute oncology service.

The job holder will work as an autonomous practitioner

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Clinical

Practice as an autonomous professional nurse with confidence, authority and expertise, undertaking comprehensive range of clinical procedures, including cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, verification of death and male catheterisation, developing competency in advanced clinical skills to deliver elements of junior doctors role, and to deliver the ten key roles of nursing.

Independently assess, prioritise and treat patients

Initiate pharmacological intervention under group protocols and administer medications as prescribed by others in accordance with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals policies

Act as a referral agent and coordinator of care provision. Establish effective multi agency collaboration across primary/secondary interface to meet the needs of the patient.

Supervise and where necessary, work in collaboration with other nursing team members, demonstrating expert clinical practice to the ward team.

Maintain a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust guidelines and policies.

Lead and advise on nursing practice using current evidence based advances in nursing research and own knowledge and experience.

Actively promote an environment that enables the nursing team to work efficiently in meeting the needs of the patient and their carer, ensuring patient individuality and choice is applied to all elements of care.

Facilitate and support effective written and verbal communication between all members of the multi disciplinary team and Primary Care Team to support the delivery of effective care.

Support the Senior Sister / Charge nurse in setting and monitoring standards and seek to continuously improve standards and quality of patient care, including those standards defined in the National Benchmarks for Essential care.

Attend all medical emergencies initiating and maintaining Intermediate Life Support (and Advanced Life Support if ALS provider) where required.

Develop skills in Supplementary and Extended Nurse Prescribing

2. Management / Leadership

Work within the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Guidelines, the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust policies and guidelines, COSHH, the Mental Health Act and other instruments of statutory legislation to ensure safe and effective professional working practices for self and others.

In conjunction with the Senior Sister / Charge nurse ensure management of clinical services including staff rostering ensuring adequate numbers and skill mix, using knowledge and skills to effectively deploy staff according to service needs. Working with Senior Sister / Charge Nurse closely monitor bank and agency usage.

Working with senior Sister / Charge Nurse provide leadership to the clinical team, developing new rotas / ways of working, promoting the development of nurses undertaking the CNO Ten Key Roles as considered appropriate.

Support Senior Sister / Charge Nurse in investigating and responding to accidents, complaints, serious untoward incidents and other significant events.

Deputise for Senior Sister / Charge Nurse and or Matron in their absence.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of new staff to the nursing team.

Be supportive, approachable and act as a positive role model.

Contribute to the formulation and implementation of policies, guidelines, protocols and practice.

3. Quality

Work with Senior Sister / Charge Nurse to ensure that clinical governance processes at ward level encompass measures to ensure the quality of the fundamentals and essential aspects of care.

Regularly monitor, discuss and evaluate nursing care to ensure improvements in quality of care.

Be involved in clinical supervision of self and others using reflective practice to support this process.

Actively promote quality-based initiatives within the unit, incorporating local and national guidelines and recommendations

Support the implementation of benchmarking using the Essence of Care, in line with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust approach.

Be actively involved in the units auditing processes

4. Education and Training

Develop a continuous learning culture within the clinical area, actively promoting the sharing of knowledge and experience amongst team members offering advice and support as required.

In conjunction with the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse be directly involved with Individual Performance Reviewing ensuring all staff have an Individual Performance Development plan.

Ensure both self and team members achieve annual mandatory training requirements.

Be actively involved with developing teaching programmes within the unit, participating in the teaching of mandatory training updates for staff (Basic Life Support, Manual Handling, Control of Infection, and COSHH).

Participate in Preceptorship and mentorship programmes.

Undertake continuous professional and clinical development, seeking opportunities to enhance own knowledge and skills.

Participate in assisting learners to achieve their outcomes

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• RN (level 1)
• Evidence of continued professional development and implementation in clinical practice.
• Possession of two or more of the following skills: ECG recording & interpreting / Venepuncture & Cannulation / Male Catheterisation / Verification of Death / IV drug administration.
• Immediate Life Support Provider

Desirable

• Recognised teaching / assessing qualification
• Understanding of training needs in relation to post
• Extended & Supplementary Nurse Prescriber (must be willing to train to this level)
• Advanced Life Support provider

Experience

Essential

• Minimum 2 years at staff nurse level or above in medically orientated speciality.
• Able to manage own workload and resources
• Experience of clinical history taking and physical examination
• Proven experience of leading
• Able to work confidently with wide range of professionals.

Additional Requirements

Essential

• Able to fulfil Occupational Health requirements for the post.
• Flexible to be able to work a variety of shifts throughout the seven day week (52 weeks year)
