Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our new cohort of Transfer to Nursing (TTN) apprentices for February 2024 here in the Leeds Childrens Hospital. We are looking for enthusiastic Registered Nursing Associates who are passionate and motivated to develop their career by developing the skills and knowledge to provide high quality, patient centred care as a Registered Nurse.

One of the benefits of this course is that you can learn while you earn throughout the duration of the programme. You would be working within a high-quality nursing and education team who will be there to support you along the way.

Employment is on a fixed term contract within the Leeds Childrens Hospital. The course involves a Hub ward where you are based for much of your course, then through placements, be exposed to a variety of clinical environments enabling you to experience the wide range of specialities Leeds Childrens Hospitals can offer.

Main duties of the job

The TTN apprentices will undertake their usual RNA role when on the Hub ward. Continuing to provide all the skills and care the RNA currently undertakes.

When the TTN apprentices is on placement they wear a student nurse uniform and are supernumerary within that clinical environment. This is where the apprentice will be expected to make the most of all the learning opportunities they can. The apprentice will be supported by a preceptor, the ward team and clinical educators.

A TTN apprentice will have 7.5 hours of study per week to undertake lectures and course work. The rest of the hours are working clinically.

Job responsibilities

The Transfer to Nursing - Apprentice Nurse course is up to a three year education programme, working to become a Registered Nurse with a BSc Hons degree in Adult Nursing. The course combines work-based and academic learning between LTHT and an approved Higher Education Institute (HEI).

As a Transfer to Nurse student you will be based as a paid employee, within LTHT. Whilst you will be allocated to one specific area, you will experience working across both internal and external placements to gain an appreciation of the different areas of local healthcare services and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements for entry to the NMC register, which will provide you with Registered Nurse status.

You will be required to achieve the education and practice standards as set out by the NMC, HEI and the Institute of Apprenticeships and undertake an integrated end point assessment, as well as completion of the degree programme.

During the degree programme you will develop skills and knowledge that will allow you to work in todays dynamic and changing healthcare environment. You will be required to commit to self-directed study and successfully complete the programme within the contract period.

As part of the apprenticeship you will be required to:

Deliver high quality, compassionate care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse with a focus on promoting patient health and independence

Successfully complete and pass the academic and practice elements of the programme as specified by the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust (LTHT), HEI and Institute of Apprenticeship standards. According to these standards you will be required to complete 4,300 hours equally divided between theory and practice as off the job training. You will also be required to complete an apprentice portfolio that demonstrates learning and skills and complete an end point assessment.

Successfully complete the nursing competencies related to NMC standards as specified by the Trust and the University

Have sound attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values and LTHT values as set out in The Leeds Way

Work as part of a designated clinical care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the patient as a rostered member of staff as on the job training

Work with an NMC approved assessor, taking responsibility for developing your own nursing competence while on placements and attending academic study; maintaining evidence of your learning

Adhere to the policies and procedures required as an employee of LTHT

Work within the competency boundaries as set at each stage of the programme and as determined by the Nursing and Midwifery standards for registered nurse preparation, regardless of previous healthcare experience.
