We are currently seeking a Band 5 Peri - Operative Practitioner - ODP to join our friendly dedicated small team within The One Day Unit, Leeds Dental Institute.

The successful applicant will be required to work 20hrs pw over 2 days(mon-fri) and provide excellent care to meet the individual patient need and support them through their Day Case Journey. This includes working in the anaesthetic room, Ward area, first stage recovery and Theatre (scrub and circulate).

The One Day Unit is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit situated within the Leeds Dental Institute. If successful you will be working alongside a Multidisciplinary team consisting of Registered Nurses, Operating Department Practitioners, Peri-Operative Assistant and visiting surgeons, Anaesthetists and Dental Students.

The Patients range from 3yrs to Adult attending for minor Oral Surgery procedures under General Anaesthetic/ IV Sedation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder must provide patient centred care and take responsibility for patients undergoing minor oral procedures under a General Anaesthetic including Pre and Post operative care, Scrub and Circulate in theatre, PACU and Anaesthetic room duties.

The post holder may be required to take charge of the department as necessary in the absence of the band 6/7

The post holder will participate in the in- service training , preceptorship and mentorship of junior staff, post basic learners and students

The post holder will contribute to the development of service and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and outcome and ensure standards of care are monitored and maintained at the highest level.

The successful post holder will work according to the NMC code of professional standards of practice and behaviour and relevant professional guidelines and be accountable for their own professional actions. They must use up to date knowledge and competencies relevant to the department and to ensure continued professional development

About us

The Dental Hospital is situated on the ground floor of the Worsley Medical and Dental building which also accommodates the Dental school , Medical school and the University of Leeds Sciences Library. It is located on the southern side of the University campus half a mile from the city centre and is connected to the Leeds General Infirmary via a link to level four in the Clarendon wing.

Since 2003 the LDI has been undergoing a period of rapid expansion and transformation. Outreach teaching clinics have been established in Bradford, Leeds and Hull.

Training of the Dental team includes Undergraduates, Postgraduates, Dental Nurses, technicians and therapists and offers vital team working experience.

The One Day Unit maintains links with main theatres in the LGI

To provide and be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for the Peri-operative patient. To carry out all relevant forms of care competently without direct supervision.

Communicate with members of the multi-disciplinary team to facilitate continuity of care and promote effective team working.

To assist with the teaching and supervision of learners and other staff.

The jobholder will work within an environment caring for pre, peri and post operative patients.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical

- Maintain a high standard of patient focused care in accordance with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust guidelines and policies

- Maintain a clean, secure and safe working environment

- Provide assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of Pre, Peri and Post operative care for patients, ensuring accurate written records are kept

SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Regular handling and carrying children of various weights and sizes, from neonates to young adolescents.

Daily frequent manoeuvring of patients up to 250kg on wheel chairs, beds, trolleys, operating tables, including unconscious patients and a variety of monitoring equipment to support them.

Daily frequent transferring of patients and children to and from wheel chairs, beds, trolleys, and operating tables.

Holding/supporting limbs from 10 to 30 minutes

Frequent manoeuvring of equipment e.g. procedure trays up to 20 per case.

Frequent movement of linen and rubbish

Frequent manoeuvring ie, pulling and pushing, large pieces of equipment eg, anaesthetic machines, stacking systems, monitoring, oxygen cylinders, theatre lights, image intensifiers and theatre tables.

Frequent positioning of equipment and patients which Involves bending, lifting and stretching.

Regularly standing for long periods in difficult positions, eg, holding equipment cameras, retractors, airways.

Moving equipment in response to an emergency undertaking CPR etc.

Regular handling of disorientated/violent patients both pre and post operatively.

Regular cleaning of theatre equipment.

MENTAL EFFORT:

Working in the Pre,Peri and Post-Operative environment involves frequent and prolonged periods of concentration which can be a mixture of high volume cases requiring intense concentration.

Other examples are:

Quick response to emergencies as and when arise.

Continual observation of patients vital signs.

Frequent requirement for mental agility to adapt to ever changing situations.

Frequent use of Problem solving skills eg, caring for dependant patients in a critical environment.

Involvement in mathematical calculations e.g. Intravenous Therapy, drug calculations.

Completing and maintaining accurate documentation.

Dealing with new technology eg; Anaesthetic machines, diathermy(cautery), invasive monitoring

Organising theatre lists e.g. equipment, scheduling of patients.

Assisting in peri-operative procedures with Medical staff

Monitoring and caring for patients in PACU and Ward area prior to discharge.( to include Adults and Paediatric patients)

EMOTIONAL EFFORT:

Regular direct exposure to distressed patients.

Dealing with the unexpected sudden deterioration in patients condition, eg, cardiac arrest, failed intubation and sudden bleed, sudden death.
