The Cancer Services Pharmacy Team are looking for a capable and enthusiastic pharmacy technician with the right clinical expertise and values to help support the delivery of clinical pharmacy services to cancer patients within Leeds and the wider area.

The cancer services team has a strong history of developing innovative technician led roles including the ordering of SACT and authorisation of continued supply of systemic anti-cancer medication.

This role will involve driving forwards the roles and responsibilities of our pharmacy support workers and technicians within the cancer team. You will also be a role model for clinical pharmacy colleagues, acting as a mentor for fellow technicians whose roles and careers you will be developing.

You will work alongside advanced pharmacists playing a key role in the clinical and financial oversight of a speciality which involves a wide range of complex and developing medicines.

Prior experience in the field of cancer services is desirable but not essential and appropriate training will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Technician Prescription Authorisation - both leading on this activity and developing new protocols

Education and Training - leading on training of technical staff in SACT ordering and prescription authorisation and supporting the training of trainee Pharmacists

Leading on the management of Free of Charge (FoC)/Compassionate Use/Project Orbis/Early Access to Medicines Schemes (EAMS) including setting up, liaison with key stakeholders and oversight of on-going management and stock control

Working with the Pharmacy Digital team and providing support for setting up new protocols on Chemocare and eMEDs

Supporting the implementation of bio-similar/generic switches

Quality Improvement (QI) / audit work

Supporting the management of shortages (including liaison with procurement, Boots and aseptics)

Patient counselling/education

Review of Medication Related Incidents (MRIs) / DATIX to identify trends and future learning and sharing in team meetings

Finance work e.g. supporting with vial sharing work, expenditure tracking for Waste Reduction Programmes (WRP)

Communications - newsletters / social media / noticeboards

Mentoring, coaching and managing (if appropriate) junior pharmacy colleagues

The cancer pharmacy team work together on a daily basis to ensure that some of our most complex and challenging treatments within Leeds Teaching Hospitals are delivered safely, efficiently and in a patient centered manner. Our team is made up of some highly experienced pharmacists & technicians who have strong working relationships with the wider multi-disciplinary team.

Any new starter to the team receives a thorough induction drawing on the years of experience possessed by team within various specialist fields.

We have a strong ethos of workforce development. We strive to ensure that all members of the team are able to access development opportunities not solely limited to clinical work as well as the facilitation of regular team based clinical education sessions.

The writing of procedures relating to the service in conjunction with other appropriate staff and managers. The delivery and implementation of agreed procedures and monitoring of compliance with all SOPs.

Leading and contributing to service development projects ensuring change is managed smoothly.

Liaison with GPs, community pharmacists, external organisations, LTH pharmacy colleagues and ward teams in order to improve the medicines management process.

Development of efficient communication channels with the wider pharmacy team, to ensure a good understanding of the service and the roles and responsibilities of staff.

Ensuring that medicines are stored safely, appropriately, securely and are in date and suitable for use.

The prioritisation of workload and the analysis of situations to resolve problems.

The participation in labelling, assembly, preparation, dispensing and other dispensing duties should the need arise to ensure service provision.

Identification and implementation of risk reduction strategies in your area of work.

The post holder will be required to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis.
