Job summary
An
exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly organized, motivated and
enthusiastic Band 5 Pharmacy Technician Higher Level to join the Inpatient
Pharmacy team at the LGI at Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
We
are looking for somebody who is experienced and confident to work
independently and as part of a team.
Whilst
working with the other technicians co-ordinating the daily workload in the
dispensary, some other line manager duties are included.
We
are looking for someone with excellent teamwork, communication and time
management skills and be able to demonstrate a high level of attention to
detail as well as remaining calm at busy times, being pro-active and able to
make decisions and solve problems.
The
post is based at LGI Inpatient Pharmacy
The
successful candidate will be involved in Building the Leeds Way and the Leeds
Childrens Hospital and will eventually work in a state of the art new
hospital building at the LGI for adults and children.
This
post is full time, the hours 8.45am - 5.15pm working 1 in 4 weekends and 1 in
6 late nights until 8pm
Main duties of the job
Supporting
the Specialist Technician in the day to day running of the dispensary and
supervision of staff
Deputising
for the Pharmacy Technician Team Leader
Reviewing
training plans with new staff and providing feedback to the training team
Labelling,
Dispensing and Accuracy Checking medicines for inpatients and discharges
following standard operating procedures including controlled drugs
Ordering
and stock maintenance for the dispensary

Job responsibilities
Working
under guidance of SOPs, GMP, COSHH, the post holder will:-
Dispense
and issue medicines to patients ensuring that all the necessary information
is available.
Dispense
clinical trial medication and complete all required documentation following
the defined Standard Operating Procedures.
Dispense
specialist hospital-only medicines and unlicensed medicines which require
accurate, detailed records.
Dispense
oral/IV chemotherapy medicines taking necessary precautions detailed in SOPs.
Dispense
controlled drugs and ensure that all legally required records are accurate
and up to date.
Ensure
that all information needed for accurate stock control and prescription
issues data is recorded.
Check
dispensed items for accuracy as an accredited checker.
Liaise
with Procurement staff about urgently required medicines, and informing
patients and other health care staff about supply problems / delays
Recover,
assess and re-cycle drugs dispensed to inpatients, ensuring that all
information needed for accurate stock control and prescription issues data is
recorded using the appropriate paper or electronic system.
Liaise
with medical staff and pharmacy ward teams to find out about new admissions,
discharges and transfers, to enable prioritisation of the Pharmacy service.
Answer
queries from nurses and other healthcare professional, within limit of
authority referring where required.
Promote
good communications between Pharmacy and Ward staff to ensure a safe,
efficient and cost-effective medicines service.
Provide
advice and information to patients on how to take their medicines effectively
and safely.
Assist
in the training of Pre-registration Technicians, Technicians, Pharmacy
Support Workers and pre-registration Pharmacists.
Participate
in recruitment and selection of junior technical staff
Prioritise
workload and analyse situations to resolve problems
Deputise
for the Specialist Technicians in their absence and supervise the work of
Pharmacy Technicians, Pre-Registration Technicians and Pharmacy Service
Assistants by maintaining standards of service, ensuring completion of all
specified documentation and briefing staff to inform them of any changes in
working practice
Contribute
to departmental forward planning.
Identify
own development and training needs and keep up to date with all national
codes of practice, standards and relevant legislation.
Adhere
strictly to working procedures and departmental policies both for drug supply
and security.
Comply
with Trust and departmental procedures relating to Health and Safety and
Clinical waste management.
Participate
in the weekend, evening and Bank Holiday rota
