Job summary

Inpatient Pharmacy at Gledhow Wing is looking for a friendly enthusiastic full time porter to join the team at SJUH.

The role involves delivering medicines from pharmacy to the wards and departments within the Trust.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be out and about around the hospital meeting staff and patients providing a vital delivery service. The role involves working independently and managing own time to get medicines to our wards and departments for our patients.

Our pharmacy department is friendly and supportive and we will fully support the successful candidate in induction and training.

There may be opportunity to undertake some units of the NVQ level 2 in Pharmacy Services should the successful candidate wish to progress.

The hours of work will be full time (37.5 hours a week) - 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will be required to work 1 in 4 Saturdays or Sundays and 1 in 6 evenings until 9pm.

Main duties of the job

Key duties will include:

Delivering medicines to wards and departments around the hospital obtaining signatures from ward staff

Communication between pharmacy and ward staff

Collect medicines from departments and other hospitals when required

Prioritise urgent medicines to ensure these are delivered in appropriate timescale

Use cages and trollies to transport bulky fluids, dietary products and other heavy items around the pharmacy or to wards and departments.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is member of the pharmacy operational team and will be responsible for carrying out any duties commensurate with the grade of post. The role includes provision of transfer of medicines from the pharmacy department to wards, theatres and other departments within the Trust, assisting with reception duties and supporting the dispensaries with other routine tasks. The role requires flexibility in approach to the duties required as these may alter throughout the course of a work day/week, however the post holder will have one primary role that they will orientate towards on a daily basis. High standards of quality will be expected to be delivered in line with MMPS/LTHT practices and policies.

The post holder will be expected to have basic knowledge of a number of administrative and operational functions and utilise LTHT IT systems in order to complete their job role. The nature of the role requires the use of responding to some tasks via a defined communication system.

JOB DIMENSIONS

Adhering to standards and practices in Trust Policy and Pharmacy practices/procedural manuals alongside national initiatives, to ensure that medicines are transferred in a safe and secure manner.

To be a point of contact for patients and other visitors to the Trust and provide a warm friendly welcome offering directions, support and assistance.

Team members will be expected to operate as part of the Pharmacy team covering any Trust managed service.

Principle duties

Ensure that all tasks are carried out in compliance with relevant statutory legislation and local policies and codes of practice by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system.

To remove recyclable medicines waste from wards and departments and deliver securely back to pharmacy

To clean areas/equipment in line with infection prevention and control practices/policy, portering duties must take priority.

The removal of refuse and waste to designated areas in line with Trust Infection Prevention and Control Policy/Waste Policy

The movement of medicines, fluids, dietry products and/or goods as determined by the department across the Trust sites, including associated equipment ie assisting in moving of office furniture using allocated equipment.

Responsible for the safety and security of any goods/equipment used with the specific role.

To provide appropriate response to any alarm upon activation i.e. fire alarms, including directions for responding teams.

To organise and sort goods/items in an effectively manner for distribution across the Trust sites according to schedules.

Ensure an adequate supply of items/equipment necessary for the role are maintained.

Receipt of incoming deliveries/goods/products ensuring that all goods inwards are checked against delivery notes and official orders. Ensuring that items meet quality and quantity specified and any good specific requirements.

Operation and minor maintenance of all equipment/manual handling aids necessary for the role to be used in compliance with standard operating procedures

Ensuring all communications are responded to in an efficient/timely manner.

To follow all local method statements & risk assessments to ensure that the role is undertaken in a safe, secure manner.

Act on feedback given from any quality assurance system

Communication with allied health professionals/trust staff members to ensure that the patients health and wellbeing is being maintained in helping to deliver excellent clinical outcomes.

To report any faults/issues/complaints/Health & Safety concerns regarding service provision or equipment immediately to the supervisor or other appropriate senior Trust staff member.

To complete and record role specific data/information either electronically or in written format that is required complying with operational procedures or local/Trust/National policy and audit recommendations/controls.

To provide a warm professional welcome and supportive communication to patients and visitors to the Trust, providing an efficient and courteous service.

Use and maintain any role specific databases/hardware/software, in accordance with departmental guidelines.

Ensure that all duties are carried out in line with quality control procedures using standard facilities documentation.

To ensure that the correct uniform and PPE is worn at all times whilst on duty.

To undertake the duties of any of the specific job role ensuring that all the procedures, correct practices are adhered to.

To support the training of team members in the delivery of on the job service skills.
