Job summary

We are looking to recruit enthusiastic and highly self-motivated individuals to join our Pharmacy team and to complete the multi-sector Pharmacy Technician Training Programme Apprenticeship with Buttercups Training.

You will be required to work with different pharmacy teams whilst completing the apprenticeship. You will need to demonstrate that you are a team player, be a proactive learner and are able to plan and organise your own workload. You need to be flexible in your approach to work and have good attention to detail. Excellent communication skills are a must and most importantly a professional attitude and patient centred approach.

Your duties will be varied and will involve contributing to the delivery of pharmacy services across various sites within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and at external pharmacy organisations whilst completing the requirements to meet the Apprenticeship standard.

On completion of Pharmacy Technician Training Programme you will be required to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Main duties of the job

Your duties will include working in our hospital in-patient and outpatient pharmacies, dispensing prescriptions and issuing prescribed items, contributing to all aspects of pharmaceutical stock control.

You will be joining a team of pre-registration trainee Pharmacy Technicians rotating around each LTHT site and you will meet a wide range of people from lots of different backgrounds. Working closely with your fellow pre-registration pharmacy technicians and multi-disciplinary teams you will gain valuable knowledge and skills along the way

You will gain experience working on the hospital inpatient wards, delivering pharmacy ward-based services including taking patient medication histories and educating patients on their medicines. There will also be placements within the Leeds Medicines Advisory Service, Clinical Trials and other pharmacy organisations external to LTHT.

The post holder will be required to work evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays on a rotational basis.

JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

Train to be a registered Pharmacy Technician over a 2 year period undertaking the Level 3 Pharmacy Technician Training Programme Apprenticeship

Based at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and working on rotation supporting Pharmacy services across Leeds. Placements may include Leeds Community Health, Leeds and Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust and Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire.

These duties will be predominantly concerned with labelling, assembly, preparation, dispensing, accuracy checking, receipt and distribution of pharmaceuticals. There will be medicines reconciliation and patient consultation duties

You will be required to undertake a formal level 3 apprenticeship qualification which meets General Pharmaceutical Council standards and will enable qualification and registration as a Pharmacy Technician.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Working to relevant Standard Operating Procedures and the Initial Education Standards for Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacy Technicians:

Complete a Level 3 Pharmacy Technician Training apprenticeship within 27 months of commencing employment.

Undertaking placements which may include Leeds Community Health, Leeds and Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust and Community Pharmacy West Yorkshire.

Dispensing of validated prescriptions, which will include labelling, preparation, assembly and dispensing.

Participate in the accuracy checking of prepared medicines.

Communicate information to patients, colleagues, other AHPs and service users.

Picking, packing and despatch of pharmaceuticals against authorised stock requisitions.

Provide support to the Specialist Pharmacy Technician in all aspects of stock control, including stocktaking.

Assist in ordering processes for medicines and consumables, including ordering, unpacking, checking, booking in and putting away orders.

Resolve immediate problems with stock discrepancies and out of stock medicines, liaising with colleagues, wards, pharmacists and suppliers where necessary.

Involvement in stock control and ordering of medicines at ward level.

Undertake medicines reconciliation

Initiate medicine supply.

Provide medicines information and advice to patients and non pharmacy staff.

Reception duties to include: - incoming calls, booking work in and out of the pharmacy tracker system, dealing with visitors to the department and responsible for receipts of money for prescription charges.

Perform clerical tasks associated with the area of work e.g. filing, expiry date checks, temperature monitoring and data collection for statistics.

Assists in training and supervision of other staff.

Ensure all medicines released to wards are distributed in a safe and secure manner following SOP.

Ensure waste is removed and disposed of correctly.

Assist in general housekeeping e.g. cleaning and tidying of work areas.

Assist with recycling of medicines.

Assist with delivery of medicines when requested.

Replenish supplies of drugs, consumables or equipment in key areas.

Participation in late night, weekend and Bank Holiday working on a rotational basis.
