Job summary

This is a 12-month Medical Oncology Locum Consultant post with special interest in Lung cancer, delivering systemic anti-cancer therapies. The post will support an established and experienced non-surgical oncology Lung team and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the MDT and departmental meetings, as well as teaching and service developments. This is an exciting time to join our Lung Service, as we are currently looking at pathway redesign, alongside developing the service and the wider team.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES OF THE POST

Delivery of lung out-patient clinics

Attendance at MDT meetings

Participate in ward rounds and the on-call rota

Prescription of systemic and hormone therapy.

Discussion with patients and their relatives

Initiation / change of treatments

Manage patients receiving treatment for lung cancer

Attendance at service and departmental meetings.

Work closely with clinical colleagues and support the wider lung team with clinical activity. Provide mutual cross-cover for colleagues where necessary.

BACKGROUND

This is an 8 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Medical Oncologist, with a special interest in Lung cancer.

This post will deliver approximately 6 PAs supporting the Non-surgical Oncology Lung cancer service. The remaining PAs will cover SPA and on call activities.

The post will support established and experienced multi-disciplinary non-surgical Oncology Lung team and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital. The successful candidate will work alongside the Non-surgical Oncology Leeds Lung team which is led by Dr Pooja Bhatnagar and is supported by Dr Clarke, Dr Teo, Dr Jaques and Dr Sun).

There will be opportunities to contribute to the central Leeds Lung MDT and departmental meetings, as well as teaching, research and service developments. 2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

2.1 To deliver care to patients with Lung at the Leeds Cancer Centre, through:

Out-patient clinics

Care of Lung in-patients on a 1:6 rota

Contribution to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

Contribution to a medical oncology on-call rota 1:14

2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site

specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and across the Yorkshire Cancer Network.

2.3 To work with colleagues across medical oncology to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 14). This includes both out-of-hours cover in addition to acute ward rounds during normal working hours.

2.4 To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Leeds Cancer Centre. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must hold accreditation in MB BS, MB ChB or equivalent with the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

3.2 Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of medical oncology and appropriate experience in Breast and Gynaecological cancers. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials.

3.4 Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

4. TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in medical oncology in the Local Education and Training Board.

5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

The job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for medical oncology. The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan. There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantly within the area.

5.1 Proposed Job Plan

The post consists of 8 PAs with 6.5 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PAs of supporting professional activity (SPA). These 8 PAs will be delivered in St James University Hospital.

This job plan will fit together with colleagues job-plans with a careful rota of clinical sessions, to ensure robust cover.
