Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Allergy

Job responsibilities

Leeds Paediatric Allergy service is one of the largest in the country currently providing a secondary and tertiary allergy service to children of Leeds and Yorkshire. The large multidisciplinary team includes four paediatric allergy consultants, a specialty doctor, 5 allergy nurse specialists, 4 allergy dietitians and clinical psychologist. The service supports children with IgE and non-IgE mediated food allergy, allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, drug allergy, venom allergy, chronic spontaneous urticaria and complex multisystem allergic disease. The service provides skin prick testing, intradermal testing, oral food challenges, supervised feeds, allergen specific immunotherapy and systemic treatments for severe chronic spontaneous urticaria. Oral graded challenges are run on designated Childrens Allergy Day Unit (CADU) facility five days a week. Whilst allergen specific immunotherapy is currently mainly offered for inhalant allergy, there are plans to imminently start offering oral immunotherapy for peanut allergy. The service is actively contributing to academic and commercial research with exciting plans to become one of the paediatric allergy centres taking part in oral immunotherapy trial for milk and peanut allergy within the NHS. Successful candidate will have opportunity to actively contribute to this ground breaking research.

This job is purely within paediatric allergy. There is no general paediatric commitment either for daytime, on call, out of hours or weekends.

As a part of this exciting and unique role, successful post holder will have following clinical responsibilities:

1. Attendance at regular paediatric allergy clinics and after a period of training, undertaking general paediatric allergy clinics with support of the supervising consultant.

2. Training in performing and interpretation of diagnostic tests include skin prick testing, intradermal testing, specific IgE blood testing, component resolved diagnostics.

3. Active supervised role in consult service which involves seeing in-patient cases for all the sub-specialities within the hospital

4. Routine role in supervision of day-case provocation challenges and immunotherapy

5. Regular attendance at weekly clinical/educational meetings

6. Attendance at departmental study days, as well as BSACI and BPAIIG study days

7. Departmental Research

The trainee will also be expected to perform an audit and take an active role in the review of current guidelines and the development of new guidelines. They will be encouraged to take an active role in the departmental research programme and to present their work at regional, national and international meetings.

Experience

Essential

• 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice; including:

• Evidence that present achievement andperformance is commensurate with totality of their period of training

• Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality improvement project, formal research project or other activity which:
• focuses on patient safety and clinical improvement
• demonstrates an interest in and commitment to the specialty beyond the mandatory curriculum
• Teaching: Evidence of interest in, and experience of teaching
• Evidence of feedback for teaching Instructor status (or a recommendation for instructor status) in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent course

Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills

Essential

• Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
• Eligibility to work in the UK.
• Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
• Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated as follows:
• Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English. OR
• Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
• OR Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
• If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills
