Trust Doctor (Foundation Year 2 equivalent)

The closing date is 09 April 2026

Job summary

Applications are invited for Trust Doctor (TD) positions within the Specialty and Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit (CSU) at St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH), Leeds.

Our TD posts, which are fixed-term for 4-months from 1st April 2026, are designed to provide a wide range of clinical experience in Acute, General, and Elderly Medicine. Successful applicants will be given an opportunity to work within our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) service, on our Acute Medical Units, and on our in-patient Specialty Wards. Excellent training will therefore be provided in the management of acutely unwell and deteriorating patients, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, rehabilitation, multidisciplinary teamworking, and discharge planning.

Each Trust Doctor will be allocated a named Educational Supervisor. Opportunities will be provided to join our audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance programme. There are excellent training facilities at SJUH and, across the CSU, educational meetings are held on most days of the week.

Main duties of the job

Postholders will contribute to all aspects of the Specialty and Integrated Medicine service. We expect a particular focus on:

Good clinical care;

Maintaining good medical practice;

Good relationships and communication with patients;

Good working relationships with colleagues;

Good teaching and training;

Professional behaviour and probity.

The ideal applicants for these positions will therefore be able to demonstrate excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills. They will be able to work cooperatively with colleagues across our multidisciplinary teams, managing their time effectively. The successful applicants will be committed to providing expert medical care, including discharge planning, in patients presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

Post-holders will be given the option of contributing to an out-of-hours rota providing cover for SDEC and medical admissions, as well as our in-patient wards.

About us

You will join the Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) and Urgent Care Clinical Service Units (CSUs) at St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) which together cover Acute Internal Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Elderly Medicine, Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine. Although postholders will undertake most of their clinical duties within their allocated parent specialty, they may be asked to contribute to the care of patients in all these areas from time-to-time.

Our department at SJUH is currently based across Chancellors Wing and Gledhow Wing. It comprises four Acute Medical Units (one of which incorporates a High Observation Unit (HOBS)), a Same Day Emergency Care service (with both a Medical Unit and Older Persons Unit), two General Medicine / Diabetes & Endocrinology wards, five Elderly Medicine wards, a combined SIM ward, and an Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine Unit.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles. As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.
