Job responsibilities
You
will join the Leeds Centre for Older Peoples Medicine, which sits within the
Specialty and Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit (CSU) at St Jamess
University Hospital (SJUH). The department has close links with teams covering
General Internal Medicine, Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Infectious
Diseases & Travel Medicine.
The
department is hard-working, friendly and co-operative. There is a strong focus
on continual improvement, multi-disciplinary teamwork, clinical excellence, and
patient safety and quality.
Excellent
training will be provided in the management of acutely unwell and deteriorating
patients, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, rehabilitation, and complex
discharge planning.
Opportunities
will be provided to join our audit, quality improvement, and clinical
governance programme. There are excellent training facilities at SJUH. Across
the CSU, educational meetings are held on most days of the week.
KNOWLEDGE,
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Completion of Internal Medicine
Training Year 1 and 2 competencies (or equivalent).
Completion of the MRCP(UK) diploma (or
equivalent).
At least 12-months' experience working
within the NHS with relevant clinical experience in Acute / General and / or
Elderly Medicine.

DUTIES
OF THE POST
To ensure high quality and safe care of
patients within the department resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.
To contribute directly to patient care
by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations and acting on
results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to patients and their
relatives/carers about their illness and clinical progress.
To undertake essential administrative
duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and
liaising with colleagues in primary care.
To contribute to a multidisciplinary
approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied
healthcare professionals, including specialist nurses, physiotherapists,
occupational therapists, and discharge coordinators.
LEVELS
OF RESPONSIBILITY
The
post-holder will be expected to work at the level of a Registrar (ST3
equivalent). They will have access to supervision and support from a Consultant
Physician at all times.
TEACHING
AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
Opportunities will be provided to join
our audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance programme, as well as
our departmental educational meetings.
There will be opportunity to
participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Study leave is available, at the
discretion of Educational Supervisors, for courses/training related to Acute,
General and Elderly Medicine.

CONDITIONS
OF SERVICE
This
post is covered by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales)
Terms and Conditions of Service. These documents are available on the Medical
Staffing Intranet site.
The
post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council
(GMC) and hold a licence to practice.
Standards
of Conduct and Behaviour
You
are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in
Good Medical Practice. This includes
protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other colleagues
conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it is
necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform
your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.
The
Trust has a set of expected behaviours for all employees and additional
behaviours and skills that are expected of managers and supervisors.
Leave
Arrangements
All
leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy,
normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional
circumstances.
Training
The
jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for
his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional
Development remains a priority. The
jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
Health
& Safety
All

the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the

policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and

Smoking
Policy
The
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust recognises the serious hazards to health

any part of Trust property, whether inside or outside the hospital
buildings.
Rehabilitation
of Offenders Act & DBS Disclosure
This
position involves access to patients during the normal course of duties and is
therefore subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order)
1975. As such you must reveal any
information which you may have concerning convictions which would otherwise be
considered as spent.
An
offer of appointment to this post would be subject to the express condition
that the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust receives a satisfactory Disclosure and
Barring Service (DBS, formerly CRB) Disclosure which will check the existence
and the content of any criminal record received.
The

Infection
Control
The
jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
Infection Control policies, in particular by practicing Universal Infection
Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and after contact
with patients and their environment.
