The Leeds Emergency Medicine Departments offer 12-month Clinical Fellowships designed to provide individually tailored experience and training for those who want to develop a special interest in specific areas of Emergency Medicine
Fellowship posts are available from August 2026 onwards.
Main duties of the job
The posts are adaptable to suit the candidate's areas of interest - Candidates will be supported in developing a new service that supports the wider emergency needs of the patients in Leeds. Leeds teaching hospital is a major trauma centre and has been successful in delivering training to specialist trainees in emergency medicine and has also run a successful junior clinical fellow and a senior clinical fellow program over the years. This being new posts allows the candidate to tailor the non-clinical time to further develop their skills in emergency medicine and work towards a non-clinical portfolio.
About us
The post holders will be working at 80/20 clinical to non-clinical split of total contracted time. There will be funding available for attending relevant external courses.
The posts are offered on a fixed term contract for 6 months up to 12 months in the first instance. The post holder must be registered with GMC and hold a license to practice.
The post holder will be responsible for delivering care to patients within the Emergency Departments at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James University Hospital.

THE DEPARTMENT / ROLE:
Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country. It provides emergency care in three Emergency Departments with Adult Emergency Departments at SJH and the LGI hospitals and a separate Paeds Emergency Department at the Leeds General Infirmary. The Leeds Emergency Department offer 12-24-month Global Fellows posts designed to provide individually tailored experience and training for those who want to develop advanced skills in Emergency Medicine whilst working in a large teaching hospital and major trauma centre.
Fellowship posts are designed with non-clinical time (20%) to allow clinical development. A generous study budget.
Global fellows based on prior experience start on ST3 level/Rota and then progress to ST4 level in 12 months time. This progress is competency based.
Global fellows have a named Educational Supervisor and a monthly teaching program that is tailored to the group of Global trainees.
Starting period of 2-4 weeks as supernumerary followed by informal assessments prior to moving on the full working rota.
We welcome the development of additional areas of interest and would be happy to discuss options with you once trainee is competent and moves to ST4 level. The areas of interest already supported in the department include Education/ simulation/ Ultrasound and digital transformation and Trauma care.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The appointee must have experience in Emergency Medicine and in specialties with relevance to emergency medicine i.e. ACCS specialties, T&O, surgery, paediatrics

Ideally the candidate will have completed MCEM/FRCEM intermediate, or equivalent
Appointees must be able to demonstrate they have the skills and competencies to work at CT3 or higher level.
DUTIES
Our Global Fellows start work on the ST3 Rota across sites.
Depending on the individuals experience the applicant will work either on the CT3 or HST rota. The individual will have some time to deliver non-clinical duties on individual development needs. This non-clinical time is for the development of the fellows but there is also an expectation that fellows will contribute/ support the departments education, governance and research programs.
