INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Clinical Teaching Fellow role exists to support, develop, and deliver undergraduate medical education within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT) to University of Leeds Medical Students and associated undergraduate allied health professionals in line with multi-professional learning.

This role is based at The Undergraduate Hub (The Hub), St James's University Hospital (SJUH) but will involve work across the Trust sites.

The Hub plays a crucial role in the undergraduate MBChB student experience at LTHT and is well recognised by students for not only delivering a quality core curriculum but also as a place that promotes individualised learning and student support. Each year the Clinical Teaching Fellows develop a dynamic and high-quality teaching programme that is in line with educational reform, innovation, educational theory, and gold standard guidelines. This work is completed with the guidance of Senior Educators and is underpinned by the team's dedication to innovation and collaboration within the Trust.

DUTIES OF THE POST AND LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

-STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Scope to work with all years of undergraduate medical students on clinical placements, with the predominant workload being 3rd year students

To deliver teaching for The Undergraduate Hub programme in line with the University of Leeds MBChB curriculum

The Hubs current programme themes include:

-History and examination skills

-Practical skills and procedures

-Clinical reasoning

-Communication skills

-Prescribing

-Recognition and Responding to Acute Patient Illness and Deterioration (RRAPID)

-Multi-professional learning

Teaching methods currently in use:

-Face-to-face small group classroom

-Workshops

-More bespoke 1-to-1 sessions

-Simulation

-Ward based and bedside teaching

To participate in ongoing programme evaluation and development

To ensure education is delivered to the highest quality, in line with The Hub ethos and departmental strategy

To provide individualised support to students, for example to:

Appreciate and adapt to the needs of individual students and their unique circumstances

Identify students who may be struggling or have additional/different learning or support needs

Refer students as appropriate to services providing further support

-RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Where need is identified, innovate, and develop new teaching methods and materials

Develop and enhance teaching through quality improvement projects and regular PDSA cycles

Contribute to research, audit and innovation

Personal Development

Support is available for study towards Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education (or diploma modules if PGCert in medical education completed)

Collaboration with the wider education faculty both within the Trust and University

Experience

Essential

• Evidence that career progression is consistent with personal circumstances
• Evidence that present achievement and performance is commensurate with totality of their period of training

Desirable

• Evidence of teaching-focused CPD courses
• Evidence of regular participation in audit or quality improvement work. Number of projects should be in line with totality of their period of training.

• Fit to practise safely
• Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication including clinical terminology, and able to adapt language as required- see person Spec

Qualifications

Essential

• MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
• Full GMC registration
• Evidence of achievement of foundation competences as https://medical.hee.nhs.uk/medical-training-recruitment/medical-specialty-training/foundation-competencies. Please specify if you have a CREST form
• Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date

Desirable

• Having started/completed a formal postgraduate course in education, for example PgCert/ PGDip/master's in education
• Evidence of an educational commendation or prize awarded for education delivery

Essential

• Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues with evidence and personal reflection
• Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, and quality improvement initiatives, with evidence and personal reflection
• Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice and patient safety with evidence and personal reflection
• Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students with evidence and personal reflection
• Willingness and enthusiasm to develop teaching skills
• Experience in providing feedback with evidence and personal reflection
• Ability to foster a supportive learning environment with evidence and personal reflection
• Awareness of different teaching methodologies with evidence and personal reflection
• Able to work well in multi-professional teams with evidence and personal reflection
• Excellent time management, organisational and prioritisation skills with evidence and personal reflection

• Evidence of high-quality self-reflective practice, supported by personal examples that demonstrate learning.
• Evidence of audit or quality improvement work in education with personal reflection.
• Evidence of publication of educational work or national/international presentation of educational work
• Evidence of commitment and passion to Medical Education with personal reflection.
• Evidence of teaching occasionally with personal reflection
• Evidence of providing regular teaching as part of a defined course, over a period of approximately three months or longer, with personal reflection
• Evidence of working with local tutors to organise a teaching programme series on which you regularly taught over a period of approximately three months or longer, with personal reflection
• Experience of teaching in a variety of settings with evidence and personal reflection.
• Experience of facilitating simulation-based medical education with evidence and personal reflection.
• Evidence of receiving feedback from learners with personal reflection
