Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to build on existing experience in paediatric stem cell transplant and leukaemia. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with appropriate training to join our dedicated team. This is new post based at the Leeds Childrens Hospital at the Leeds General Infirmary in the heart of the city. Specialty Doctors are an integral part of our Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Department. Some of our Specialty Doctors have been with us for over ten years, while others have used the experience gained through working in the post as a stepping stone to a consultant post. The emphasis of the role is the in-patient and out-patient care of patients paediatric haematology patients, especially those undergoing stem cell transplantation for leukaemia and haemoglobinopathy.
Main duties of the job
DUTIES OF THE POST
The appointee will primarily be responsible for the day to day care of the paediatric and young adult haematology patients who are undergoing stem cell transplantation as well as those preparing for transplant or who are post transplant. There will be a special focus on sickle cell and leukaemia. The role will also include some clinics managing leukaemia and non-malignant haematology. They will be supported in this by the haematology consultants, the paediatric haematology registrar, the adult haematology registrar and the paediatric oncology team. As part of this they will:
Do ward rounds on the stem cell transplant unit and of other paediatric haematology patients as needed
See patients attending acutely to the day unit
Participate in clinics for stem cell transplant patients, leukaemia patients and for those with non malignant conditions in the childrens haematology and oncology day unit
Support the stem cell transplant team with administrative tasks
Share responsibility for the general anaesthetic lists carrying out haematological procedures (typically lumbar punctures and bone marrow examinations)
Participate in a weekend daytime service to the paediatric oncology department. This will be one weekend in 4-5 and involves review of all the inpatients and acute presentations to the wards from 0830-2100 on Saturdays and Sundays.
