Locum Consultant in Paediatric Neurology

Job summary

We are looking to appoint a dynamic individual to join the Paediatric Neurosciences Department at the Leeds Childrens Hospital for 6 months, in the post of Locum Consultant in Paediatric Neurology .This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established and experienced multidisciplinary team The team comprises of over 20 specialist colleagues across physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, speech and language therapy, neuropsychology as well as specialist nurses and a paediatric trauma and rehabilitation coordinator.

This post will deliver 8.5 PAs and will take part in a 1:5 on-call rota.

Main duties of the job

This post will deliver 8.5 PAs and the successful applicant will be part of a team delivering a comprehensive paediatric neurology service to the West, North and East of the Yorkshire and Humber region. They will join the 5 existing Consultant Paediatric Neurologists (Dr Anne-Marie Childs, Dr Karen Pysden, Dr Helen McCullagh, Dr Lydia Green and Dr Micheal Taylor), Dr Cristina Martos Lozano a Consultant Paediatrician with expertise in Paediatric Neuromuscular disorders, 4 Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeons (Mr John Goodden, Mr Atul Tyagi, Mr Gnanamurthy Sivakumar and Ms Rebecca Chave-Cox). The post-holder will provide 1:5 cover on the paediatric neurology consultant acute week/on-call rota. The post-holder will provide out-patient clinics at the Leeds Childrens Hospital.

The post holder will work with the existing specialist multidisciplinary neurosciences team in outpatients and on the dedicated neuroscience ward. Support will be given to develop specialised interests within Paediatric Neurology.

About us

The department of paediatric neurosciences provides a comprehensive service to the children of West, East and North Yorkshire.

Inpatient services are based at LTHT within a dedicated paediatric neurosciences unit. Outpatient clinics are held in Leeds and within all hospitals in the region as part of the Yorkshire Paediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery Network. Subspecialty clinics are provided in epilepsy, neuro-oncology, neuro-rehabiliation, neuromuscular disease and complex motor disorders.

Job description

Job responsibilities

2.1 To deliver care to patients with paediatric neurological conditions as follows:

Participate in the 1 in 5 paediatric neurology on call rota

Participate in neurology clinician-to-clinician acute and elective hub discussions

Deliver out-patient clinics and contribute to MDT discussions and care

2.2 The paediatric neurologists provide on call cover via a hot week system on a 1 in 5 basis. The consultant of the week is responsible of daily ward rounds of the neuroscience inpatients, and managing new referrals from within the Childrens hospital and the region, providing urgent clinical review and advice as needed. During the hot week, the on call consultants elective activity is suspended.

2.3 Outpatient clinics are provided at Leeds Childrens Hospital and in a number of the district hospitals across the region. The successful postholder would be expected to undertake both general neurology and subspecialty clinics depending on their own interests. Regional clinics may be provided through the Hub model in discussion with the responsible local paediatrician, or in outreach clinics off site.

2.4 The postholder will contribute to teaching, governance and service developments within the Paediatric neurology Department. They will be encouraged to contribute to ongoing clinical research activity in the department. Personal research interests will also be encouraged and supported within the departmental research programme which is currently active across neuromuscular disorders, epilepsy, headache and inherited white matter disorders.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1 Service Delivery

General

The Trust expects consultants to deliver clinical service as agreed with commissioners and other stakeholders. This will include:

continuously improving the quality and efficiency of personal and team practice

working with other staff and teams to ensure that the various criteria for service delivery are met, such as

o achieving the best clinical outcomes within the resources available

o waiting times

o infection control standards

Consultants in LTHT are line managed by their specialty Lead Clinician working in conjunction with a Business Manager. This specialty team is then managed alongside a number of other specialties in a Clinical Service (or Support) Unit (CSU) led by a Clinical Director as the responsible person and supported by a full time General Manager and a full time Head of Nursing.

The Clinical Director and their team report operationally to the Chief Operating Officer (COO). The Clinical Director will work closely with the Chief Operating Officers team which includes two Medical Directors for Operations, Nurse Directors for Operations, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Assistant Directors of Operations (ADOs) and a Performance Team, with each ADO aligned to specific CSUs.

Professionally, consultants report to Dr Magnus Harrison, Chief Medical Officer

Service specific

The consultant Paediatric Neurologist must hold Membership of the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health, or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training with sub-speciality accreditation in paediatric neurology. The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of paediatric neurology. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in clinical research in the field of paediatric neurology.
