Locum Consultant Anaesthetist

Job responsibilities

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist, supporting the current anaesthetists team of over 160 consultant anaesthetists including 9 cardiac anaesthetists. This post will be available from as soon as possible for a period of six months.

This full-time Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetic post involves 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for supporting professional activities, delivered within a carefully designed rota to ensure robust cover. Your job plan will be reviewed annually, with interim reviews as needed, and you will be managerially accountable to the Chief Executive and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer.

You are expected to adhere to the General Medical Council's "Good Medical Practice" and the Trust's "Core Behaviours" for conduct, including reporting concerns about colleagues, and participate in mandatory annual appraisals. All leave must follow Trust policy, typically requiring eight weeks' notice. You'll undertake all necessary training, including mandatory training and continuing medical education, which the Trust fully supports with time and funding.

The role provides necessary secretarial support and IT facilities, and you must comply with all Trust Health and Safety and Infection Control policies, including Universal Infection Control Precautions and diligent hand hygiene practices. Finally, maintaining strict patient confidentiality is paramount.

Candidates for this post must hold FRCA or equivalent accreditation and have completed a recognised higher specialist training program in Anaesthesia or be within six months of specialist registration in the UK.

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of cardiac anaesthesia. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in teaching, quality improvement and research.

The successful appointee will have the opportunity to contribute to clinical audit activities, including mortality and morbidity meetings, clinical audit programs, and the development and application of clinical guidelines, with allocated time in their job plan for these supporting professional activities.

They are also expected to maintain and update their skills through continuous medical education, as detailed in the separate person specification document.

Essential

• All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues demonstrated by one of the following
• Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English OR
• Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
• Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR
• Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application

• MB BS (or equivalent)
• FRCA or equivalent qualification

• Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty

Clinical Experience and Career Progression

Essential

• Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Cardiac anaesthesia, including trans-oesophageal echocardiography, and cardiac intensive care medicine.
• Specifically, he/she must demonstrate higher training in Cardiac anaesthesia
• Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
• Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research

Desirable

• Accreditation in trans-oesophageal echocardiography
• Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.

Additional Requirements

Essential

• Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK
• OR have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills

Essential

• Should have completed a recognised training programme in anaesthesia
• Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
• Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
• Understanding of current issues in the NHS

Desirable

• Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
• Attendance at recognised management course.
• Well organised and skilled in good time management.
• Effective interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team
