Job summary

The Department of Renal Transplant Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals is offering an exciting opportunity to appoint a Research fellow in the department. This is a short-term contract for 4 months.

The Hepatobiliary and Transplantation Surgical team at Leeds is very active in clinical and scientific research. Research is done in collaboration with scientists from the University of Leeds.

Several areas of interest exist including the following; Liver Cancer, Colorectal liver metastasis, Ischemia-reperfusion, normothermic machine perfusion, organ preservation. The focus of this post is organ preservation for transplantation.

There will be protected research time as part of this post, but also clinical commitments covering the Renal Transplant middle grade on-call rota and elective clinic and theatre sessions.

Main duties of the job

DUTIES OF THE POST

There will be protected time for research every week as part of the job plan. The research fellows are expected to have clinical responsibilities.

Duties will include:

Pre-admissions clinics

Operating theatre and outpatients

Discharge letters

Discussions with relatives

Initiation/change of treatment

On call

There are 15 Consultants working in Abdominal Transplantation, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Surgery at Leeds Teaching Hospitals and there are more than 1000 major procedures performed annually.

7 Consultant surgeons contribute to the renal transplant service:

The middle grade rota for renal transplant comprises of 6 people: a combination of research fellows, Speciality Registrars and Senior Clinical Fellows. Ward cover for renal transplant patients is also provided by Core Medical Trainees.

There is very close working with the Nephrology team, with daily Consultant-led joint ward rounds.
