Locum Consultant in Head & Neck and Thyroid

Job summary

This is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, with special interests in Head & Neck and Thyroid cancers. This post will be available from August 2025 for a period of 12 months

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Head & Neck and Thyroid teams to deliver both systemic therapy and radiotherapy. There will be opportunities to contribute to MDT, departmental meetings, and in-patient care.

The post will be based at St James University Hospital

The successful applicant should hold accreditation in Clinical Oncology in the Royal College of Radiologists or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants should have established skills in clinical oncology. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

Main duties of the job

MAIN DUTIES OF THE POST

Attendance at Head & Neck and Thyroid clinics.

Attendance at MDT meetings.

Participate in ward rounds

Prescription of systemic and hormone therapy.

Discussion with patients and their relatives.

Initiation / change of treatments.

BACKGROUND

This is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, with a special interest in Head & Neck cancer and Thyroid cancer.

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Head & Neck and Thyroid radiotherapy/radioiodine therapy and systemic therapy services.

The post will support an established and experienced multi-disciplinary non-surgical Oncology Head & Neck and Thyroid teams and will be based at the Leeds Cancer Centre, St Jamess University Hospital. The successful candidate will work alongside the non-surgical Oncology Head & Neck team which is led by Dr Michael Flatley, and the Head and Neck Team which is led by Karen Dyker. The substantive Head & Neck consultant team comprises of clinical oncologists: Robin Prestwich, Satiavani Ramasamy, Chrisse Podesta, and Kate Cardale, and medical oncologist, Danny Ulahannan.

There will be opportunities to contribute to the central Leeds Head & Neck and Thyroid MDTs and departmental meetings, as well as teaching, research and service developments. This is an exciting time to join our Head & neck and Thyroid services, as we are currently looking at pathway redesign, in addition to developing the services and the wider team.

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and across the Yorkshire Cancer Network.

To contribute to research, teaching, and new developments within the Leeds Cancer Centre. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

  • FRCR or equivalent qualification.

  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.

  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
