LOCUM CONSULTANT IN MAJOR TRAUMA AND ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics surgeon, with special interests in Major Trauma.

This post will deliver 10PAs supporting the Major Trauma team (Mr Kanakaris, Professor Giannoudis, Mr Harwood, Mr Foster, Mr Taylor, Mr Kapoor, Mr Bakhshayesh, Ms Lowery, Mr Vollans).

The post will be based at Leeds General Infirmary.

The CSU brings together the core services providing Vascular Surgery, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Major Trauma, Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery and Paediatric Plastic Surgery.

LEEDS MAJOR TRAUMA CENTRE (MTC) SERVICE

Leeds General Infirmary opened as a level 1 trauma centre on 2nd April 2013. Due to its regional remit it provides responsibility of care to a population of almost 3 million. The support encompasses all aspects of trauma care included attendance at trauma calls, co-ordination and prioritisation of patient care, and emergency admissions as well as emergency operating. The service was recently rewarded as the second busiest in England and also produced the second-best quality outcomes within the country (as per TARN data).

Through the West Yorkshire Major Trauma Network, the MTC serves patients across the region from incident to rehabilitation. Each morning the team has a Multi-disciplinary team meeting to discuss all major trauma patients within the hospital. Throughout the day the MTC centre receives acute admissions from around the region. Our Major Trauma Nurse specialists co-ordinate the care of our patients as soon as they come through the door into the emergency department. They then follow the patient pathway through the different levels of care that are required supporting both the patient and their relatives up until and beyond discharge. The Network was established in 2013 to bring together Major Trauma Care across West Yorkshire and is a collaboration between ourselves and five Trauma Units in other hospitals in the region.

This ensures all patients that require major trauma services have access to the right level of care at the right time, in the right environment.

We have invested a further £8m over the years to enhance facilities, including the creation of a dedicated MTC ward and theatre, and enhanced staffing.

As well as being the second largest MTC in the country we have consistently remained in the top three for outcomes. Over the last three years, Leeds MTC has been leading the way nationally in the management of major limb trauma requiring combined plastic and orthopaedic surgery which is a huge achievement.

Junior Medical Staff

Within Major trauma and General trauma and orthopaedics there are 16 SpRs supported through the Yorkshire deanery from ST3-ST8 and 5 Trust grade registrar posts providing support on a registrar rota. There are 3 Core Trainee grades and 5 trust grades and 12 FY doctors to support this rota. In addition there are two speciality Orthopaedic posts within the service establishment.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

To deliver care to patients with major trauma injuries at the Leeds General Infirmary

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on a 1 in 10 rota

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

To contribute to the role of Leeds as a Training Centre for National Trainees in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery
