Specialist Grade In Paediatric and TYA Oncology and Haematology

Job summary

The Paediatric Oncology and Haematology department at Leeds Childrens Hospital is looking to appoint a Specialist Grade Doctor to a permanent post:

The post will be adapted, dependent on previous experience and on-going needs of the appointee but will be outpatient/day care based. If the post-holder will be approaching or post CCT, then they will be given significant clinical responsibility within the department, with consultant support.

The Paediatric Oncology & Haematology Department, Leeds Childrens Hospital, is a principal treatment centre and treats all newly diagnosed children from the region. There are approximately 130 new referrals of children and teenagers with malignant disease per year. The service is delivered by a large comprehensive multi-professional team in both in-patient and out-patient including day care facilities. The centre is also a tertiary benign paediatric haematology centre with a large population of children with bleeding disorders and haemoglobinopathies. The wider childrens hospital contains the complete range of paediatric sub-specialty services including congenital cardiac surgery, renal transplantation, and a supra-regional liver transplant service.

Main duties of the job

The core duties of the post include:

Out-patient service

Attend consultant led clinics - The post-holder will review on-treatment and follow-up patients in clinic, assess patients for chemotherapy and arrange investigations etc. At times the post-holder will review acute walk-in patients as required. The appointee will prescribe chemotherapy (using Chemocare) in collaboration with the paediatric oncology pharmacists. The post-holder will also carryout follow-up clinics and assess acute admissions (along with other doctors and ACPs in the team). The post holder will contribute to the non-malignant haematology service by joining one clinic a week in haemoglobinopathies.

MDT and clinical-radiology meeting attendance

The appointee will attend the weekly oncology and leukaemia MDTs, the weekly radiology review meeting and the ward round when due to work the weekend.

Clinical Governance/Quality Improvement

The department has an active clinical governance and quality improvement programme including regular patient safety meetings, infection prevention and control meeting and chemotherapy governance meetings. It is expected that the post-holder will contribute to this programme.

Bone marrow and lumbar puncture lists

The post-holder will perform bone marrows and lumbar punctures. In addition, once appropriately trained and assessed as competent will perform intra-thecal chemotherapy administration.

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

The post is suitable for doctors who are interested in paediatric oncology or haematology particularly those wishing to develop their skills such as doctors approaching CCT or post-CCT. It would also be suitable to someone interested in a permanent position as a SAS doctor in paediatric oncology and haematology. The post holder will be expected to work alongside the consultants in running the service.

A generic capabilities framework for the Specialist grade has been developed in partnership between the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the British Medical Association and NHS Employers. It outlines the core capabilities and skills expected across all specialties for safe working practices at this Specialist grade. The terms and conditions for the Specialist grade state that doctors will need to evidence they meet these criteria to successfully enter the grade.

3.3 Personal Attributes

Practises with the professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out in GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities Framework (or equivalent for dentists).

3.4 Clinical Audit

Critically appraises and synthesises the outcomes of audit, inquiries, critical incidents or complaints and implements appropriate changes. This includes contributing to Audit meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

Expected to routinely engage in relevant activities in their specialty that are focussed on quality improvement. This participation should be reflected at annual appraisal and job planning and will be discussed in specialties as part of clinical governance programmes and meetings.
