Junior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine

Job summary

We have an opportunity for a Junior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory support Unit at St. James' University Hospital, Leeds. The Respiratory department is a large department covering 4 wards and has 16 consultants covering all aspects of respiratory medicine and is a tertiary referral centre for many subspecialties including Sleep & Complex Ventilation service. This post would be suitable for anybody who is considering pursuing acute medicine or respiratory medicine as a career option or preparing for membership exams. This post will provide excellent opportunities to gain experience of managing patients presenting with acute respiratory failure, e.g. COPD, obesity hypoventilation, neuromuscular conditions, pneumonia, PEs, to mention a few. The person will take part in daily ward rounds, MDTs, complex discharge planning for long term tracheotomised patients and will work closely with the home ventilation & sleep team. They will be supervised by consultants on RSU. It will also give them opportunity to take part in research in the unit & QIPs. They will also be involved in the junior doctor training programme; they will lead & organize the weekly teaching programme. The applicant should have experience of working as FY2 or above. Prior experience of working in respiratory medicine is preferable but not mandatory.

This post will provide the opportunity for successful candidates to work in the tertiary Respiratory Centre. It is intended that this post could be tailored to meet training needs, including opportunities for trainees to become involved in respiratory research and procedural skills.

This appointment will be based at the Department of Respiratory Medicine, St Jamess University Hospital, Leeds, one of the largest teaching hospital Trusts in the UK, serving a population of over 3 million. The department delivers specialist respiratory services including severe asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, tuberculosis, COPD, and PCD. The lung cancer service is one of the largest in the UK and is home to the Yorkshire Lung Screening Trial. We offer bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, thoracoscopy and long-term pleural drainage. There is a well-established programme in collaboration with radiology to provide pleural ultrasound certification.

The department consists of 3 inpatient wards and a 12 bed respiratory care unit offering non-invasive ventilation. There is a separate ward for the care of people with cystic fibrosis.

The department has close links with the University of Leeds and supports delivery of a number of aspects of the under-graduate MB ChB course with a number of opportunities to engage within undergraduate teaching.
