We
are recruiting to the Post of Clinical Fellow in Immunology at the Regional
Specialist Immunology and Allergy unit. This post is suitable for a candidate
at an early stage of their medical career. However, some previous experience in
the specialty is advantageous.
The
successful candidate will gain further exposure and training in all aspects of
Adult Immunology and Allergy clinical practice. Emphasis will be given to
management of patients with systemic autoinflammatory syndromes. The candidate
will also be given an opportunity to undertake a research project in this
subject area.
The
Leeds Clinical Immunology and Allergy unit is a large internationally
recognised centre of excellence with a strong commitment to clinical research.
The multidisciplinary team presently care for over 500 adult patients with
primary immunodeficiencies and autoinflammatory disorders.
The
post is for a duration of 1 year.

Main duties of the job

The
candidate should have prior experience in General Medicine. Prior experience in
Clinical immunology and Allergy is desirable but not essential.
Duties
of the Post
This
post will involve 60% clinical and 40% research. The candidate will support the
day to day running of the unit including attending outpatient immunology and
allergy clinics. The candidate will also provide be expected to supervise
challenge tests and provide support for the day-case unit.
This
post will provide the opportunity for successful candidates to work in the
regional specialist unit for Clinical Immunology and Allergy. The successful
candidate will gain extensive training in all aspects of the clinical
immunology and allergy with the main focus of the post being on the management
of primary immunodeficiencies and autoinflammatory disorders. There will be an opportunity to undertake an
MD or PhD project.

Information about the Department
The Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergy, based in Beckett Wing at St. Jamess University Hospital, provides clinical and diagnostic immunology services to Leeds, West Yorkshire and beyond. The clinical service is divided into several key areas; primary immunodeficiency, systemic autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions and allergy.
The unit provides a specialised service for the diagnosis and management of a range of rare primary immunodeficiencies including antibody, complement, phagocyte and cellular deficiencies. In addition, the unit provides a supraregional service for management of adult patients with autoinflammatory disorders.
The allergy service manages a wide range of conditions of varying complexity. There is also an expanding programme for use of biological therapies such as omalizumab in management of patients with severe chronic urticaria. There is a strong commitment to clinical research and the post will involve working as an investigator on clinical trials.

The appointee must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of the application. They should also have 24 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice. Evidence of achievement of CT competencies in medicine (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training or Core Surgical Training). An understanding of data handling, analysis and presentation is preferred.
Personal Attributes
The appointee will have good communication skills, should be well organised and skilled in good time management and be able to work effectively as part of a team.
They should have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of the responsibilities that a specialty doctor post brings.
Clinical Audit
The appointee will be expected to contribute to Audit meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings and application of agreed clinical guidelines. This will be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity (or part of one). It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).
In the discharge of these responsibilities the appointee will be expected to maintain and update their skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.
