We are seeking a dynamic Locum Consultant to join the Leeds Allergy & Immunology Specialist services at St James University Hospital. The appointee will become a key member of a dedicated and highly experienced multi-disciplinary team. The job is part time fixed term locum compromising of 10 programmed activities fixed term locum post , with supervision of the junior doctors and specialist nurses. There will be an on-call commitment of 1:4. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust makes up one of the largest teaching hospitals in Europe housing over 2,000 beds and providing a range of general, acute and elective services, together with a significant number of regional and supra-regional specialties. The department has recently gained QPIDS re-accreditation. We are committed to providing high quality specialist care to patients suffering from allergic, immunodeficiency and autoinflammatory disorders. Great emphasis has been placed on delivering a friendly, consultant led, patient centric service. Our multidisciplinary teams are a key part of our success and include anaesthetics, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacists, physician associate and researchers. There is a dedicated outpatient and Day- Case facility.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant should possess Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register. Job responsibilities

This is a 10PA locum appointment for a Consultant Allergy and Immunology.

The post will join Dr Sinisa Savic, Dr Anoop Mistry and Dr Claire Stockdale to provide specialist services for the West, North & large parts of East Yorkshire. Altogether the service serves a population of just over 3 million people. We also provide a supra regional service for patients with systemic autoinflammatory disorders. The service is divided into three key areas; primary immunodeficiency, allergy and autoinflammatory disorders.

The appointee will work at St Jamess University Teaching Hospital, where there will be outpatient responsibilities. There is a commitment to Immunology on call on a 1:4.

Primary Immunodeficiency Services:

The unit provides a specialised service to hospitals and GPs for the diagnosis and management of a range of rare primary immunodeficiencies including antibody, complement, phagocyte and cellular deficiencies. In addition, the unit is responsible for ongoing management of over one hundred adults with primary antibody deficiency as well as being a recognised home therapy centre. The immunodeficiency unit was accredited with a previous scheme run by the UK Primary Immunodeficiency Network. We are currently in process of reaccrediting the service with QPIDS accreditation scheme run by the Royal College of Physicians.

Allergy Services:

The unit provide medical care for a large number of patients with various types of allergic diseases. This includes management of patients with food, venom, drug and aeroallergies. The service provides allergen specific immunotherapy for severe seasonal allergic rhinitis (subcutaneous or sublingual route) and other aeroallergens (house dust mite and animal dander). We also offer allergen immunotherapy for bee and wasp venom. There are monthly multidisciplinary clinics for anaesthetic drug allergy. The unit also manages the largest cohort of patients in the UK receiving omalizumab for chronic spontaneous urticaria. The allergy service continues to experience high demand, with 20% annual increase in activity.

Systemic autoinflammatory disorders:

The unit provides a supra regional service for patients with systemic autoinflammatory disorders. The unit is responsible for management of patients with genetically defined conditions such as TRAPS, FMF and MVK deficiency but there is also have a large cohort of patients with AOSD and other genetically undefined systemic autoinflammatory disorders. The service is supported by a genetics laboratory which provides routine testing using specifically designed genes panel. The day case unit provide facilities for administration of biological therapies such as infliximab, anakinra and tocilizuamb.

Paediatric and transitional care

In addition to these responsibilities, both consultants provide paediatric immunology support to childrens services at the General Infirmary. Paediatric immunodeficiency clinics are delivered on a monthly basis whilst paediatric autoinflammatory clinics run once every 3 months. There are currently plans to extend the input into paediatric services to help to deliver transitional clinics for paediatric allergy patients.

Diagnostic immunology services are provided to West Yorkshire and beyond. The diagnostic immunology laboratory is one of the largest in the UK. In 2010 nearly 300,000 tests were performed. At present the laboratory service is headed by one of the medical consultants who has 4 programmed activities in the laboratory.

The diagnostic laboratory provides consultant support to a number of hospitals around the Yorkshire region (York, Harrogate, Mid-Yorkshire hospitals, Huddersfield). As part of the job plan for this post, support to these laboratories will be addressed flexibly to meet the demands of the service.

Research activity

There is very active translational research programme within the department. In addition to basic and translational research into primary immunodeficiencies and systemic autoinflammatory syndromes, the unit is participating in several clinical studies.
