Job summary

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant in Otolaryngology, with a sub-speciality interest in Rhinology. This is an exciting opportunity to provide expert care in Rhinology while contributing to the general ENT service.

This post will deliver 8.5 PAs supporting the ENT team and 1.5 SPA. This post will be available for a period of 12 months. The post will be based at the ENT department, General Infirmary at Leeds and Wharfedale General Hospital.

The successful applicant should hold accreditation with the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants should have established skills in Otolaryngology. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

About us

Leeds is a large city with the third largest metropolitan population in the country. The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS Trusts in the UK. The Bexley Wing of St James Hospital is a state of the art oncology centre, serving the whole region.

The ENT department has been rehoused in a new area, offering adjacency of clinic, consultant office, secretaries and management staff, which greatly enhances the working environment. Theatres are in the same area as our related specialties, allowing ease of interspecialty work. The paediatric work is carried out in the adjacent Childrens Hospital, with excellent ward and ICU facilities.

The ENT unit consists of 13 consultants. There are currently 6 middle grade posts and 6 junior doctors, making this a thriving department covering almost all aspects of ENT surgery.

The post will be based at The General Infirmary at Leeds and Wharfedale General Hospital. The Leeds Teaching Hospitals is a tertiary referral centre. The ENT Department consists of 14 Consultants. We cover all subspecialities in ENT including Rhinology, Skull base, Paediatrics, Head & Neck and Otology. We are looking for a fixed term locum to help with the expanding workload, with an interest in Rhinology preferable. There will also be on call commitments taking referrals from district hospitals as well as managing direct referrals.

OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Otolaryngology
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances
  • Well organised and skilled in good time management.

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS (or equivalent) FRCS (ORL HNS) or equivalent qualification
  • Has completed a recognised training programme in Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practice. Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely

Desirable

  • Higher degree e.g. MD/PhD relevant to the subspecialty.
