ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Leeds Spinal Unit is looking to appoint a
Spinal Fellow to the join our long established fellowship programme. These posts will be based at the Leeds
General Infirmary (LGI). We have several start dates between February 2025 to
February 2026. Successful candidates are
to be appointed for a fixed term of 1 year and is suitable for a committed
senior spinal surgical trainee who may wish to obtain extra experience in
spinal surgery and has an interest in clinical research. The successful
candidate will join a department of 12 Specialist Spinal Consultants, 3-4
specialty trainees, and a Clinical Nurse Specialist.
The
clinical work will involve a wide range of spinal conditions including
deformity, lumbar and cervical degenerative conditions, trauma, infection and
tumour. Opportunities will also be
available to gain experience in the management of spinal injuries at the
LGI. Research work will involve a main
project and there will be an expectation to achieve at least one publication in
a peer reviewed journal.
MEDICAL

The
candidate should have achieved competency in Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery in
line with their Speciality training programme at a level approaching or having
achieved CCT (or equivalent).
Candidates
must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to
practice at the time of application.
DUTIES
OF THE POST
The
candidate will be expected to provide supervised input into the care of
patients. This would involve the following:
Pre-admissions
clinics
Ward
management
Operating
theatre and outpatients
Post-operative
intensive care
Discussions
with relatives
Initiation/change
of treatment
LEVELS
OF RESPONSIBILITY
Inpatient
and Outpatient duties, independent decision making and liaising with senior
doctors.
The
successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the departments
research and clinical trials programme. A tailored training programme will be
negotiated around previous experience, and professional development plans.
Candidate
will be expected to take part in the Spinal on-call rota and this should not
interfere with the day to day commitments of the fellowship post.
TEACHING
AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
Regular
sessions of teaching for junior doctors and nursing staff. Candidates expected
to lead journal clubs including initiating, participating and taking leadership
roles in research projects.
The
fellow will have opportunities to attend local weekly MDT and monthly
educational departmental meetings, and will be supported to attend national and
international meetings and educational events.
The
successful applicant will be required to provide teaching for colleagues and
trainees, and will be expected to provide evidence of feedback in line with
good medical practice guidelines.
Training
opportunities will be tailored to the successful candidate, taking level of
experience and training needs into consideration. The successful candidate will
receive extensive training in simple and complex spinal surgery.

The
post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council
(GMC) and hold a licence to practice.
Standards
of Conduct and Behaviour
You
are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in
Good Medical Practice. This includes
protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other colleagues
conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it is
necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform
your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.
Your
general conduct at work should comply with the standards set out in the Trusts
document on Appraisal, in particular the section on Core Behaviours.
Leave
Arrangements
All
leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy,
normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional
circumstances.
Training
During
the course of your employment, you agree to undergo whatever training the Trust
deems necessary. This may include, but
is not limited to, induction training, professional development and safe
working practices. Funding of such
training will be in accordance with the Trusts Staff Development Policy.
