Job summary

We are inviting applications to fill our Locum Appointment for Service (LAS) doctor vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in Genitourinary Medicine (Sexual Health & HIV).

These are full or part time posts with or without on call and will commence ASAP. They are fixed term until August 2025 initially with potential extension pending national specialty training recruitment outcome.

This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in Sexual Health and HIV medicine and join a friendly team committed to a high quality, flexible service delivering open access for integrated sexual health and centralised outpatient HIV care within modern premises. There is a regular postgraduate programme within the department and adequate off-duty periods for study.

You will need to be at least 4 years post registration and experience in gynaecology would be desirable. Candidates must be fully registered with the GMC and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role will be to provide Sexual Health and HIV outpatient clinics for our Leeds Sexual Health (LSH) and HIV outpatient services respectively. LSH is an integrated sexual health service with a hub clinic at Beeston Hill Health Centre, plus smaller spoke sites across the city where you may be required to attend. Our HIV outpatient service is based at the Brotherton Wing Clinic at LGI.

Previous experience in Genitourinary Medicine or management of STIs/contraception is desirable. However, a full induction programme will be provided. You will gain comprehensive experience in all aspects of this speciality including STIs, contraception, HIV & HIV prevention and other medical genital conditions at this large teaching hospital.

If with an on-call commitment you will join a registrar rota for acute HIV medicine / Infectious Diseases covering inpatient HIV/ID beds at SJUH and so experience in managing acute unselected medical take and MCRP (or equivalent) is highly desirable.

About us

Both the Leeds Sexual Health and HIV outpatient service multi-disciplinary teams are friendly and dynamic. The two services are separately commissioned but work very closely together and are both dedicated to providing high quality patient care. As both services have large patient cohorts you will benefit from a broad range of experience both in clinical exposure and MDT working. Both services have close links with multiple other services including community organisations, public health, primary and secondary care. There is ample opportunity to get involved with other non-clinic activities e.g. teaching and clinical governance including audit projects.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles. As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The Genitourinary Medicine service comprises the centralised HIV outpatient service based at Brotherton Wing Clinic, Leeds General Infirmary; and the integrated Leeds Sexual Health service whose hub clinic is based at Beeston Hill Health Centre, with other satellite clinic sites around the city. We have active SH/HIV research and teaching programmes.

Leeds Sexual Health (LSH) provides integrated Contraception and Sexual Health services and third-sector provision as part of a consortium between LTH, Leeds Community Healthcare Trust, the Leeds GP confederation and Forum Central (voluntary sector).

LSH provides sexual health, contraception and HIV prevention including complex HIV Prep with daily mixed clinics comprising same-day and booked appointments with self referral and triage for emergency cases, plus online and postal/e-prescription services. There is 6-day opening at the Beeston hub including evening access Monday and Thursday (no Saturday clinic expectation for resident Drs), plus further spoke sites operational around the city.

There are, in addition, over 6000 HIV appointments per year. Leeds Local Authority is the highest prevalence area in Yorkshire & Humber having exceeded HIV population prevalence over 2/1000 since 2012, and as such the department has built up a reputation as a centre of expertise for HIV/AIDS. Leeds committed to Fast Track City status in 2023, working towards the HIV zero goals of 2030 and restarting NHSE ED opt-out BBV testing in 2024. LTH is the West Yorkshire HIV network regional centre with a local HIV cohort of ~2500 including spoke clinic sites in Dewsbury and Wakefield. Most of these patients are outpatients but there is a significant in-patient workload which is managed on Ward J20 at St Jamess Hospital, led by the ID consultant team, with registrar and junior support from a combination of ID & GUM teams. We work very closely with HIV support services like BHASkyline & Yorkshire Mesmac, with engagement worker & peer mentors supporting retention in care
