Job summary

Applications are invited for an Orthopaedic Surgical Liaison Trust Doctor position within the Specialty and Integrated Medicine Clinical Service Unit at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post would be ideally suited to a resident doctor who has completed Internal Medicine Training (or equivalent).

The Trust Doctor post, which is available for immediate start and fixed-term until 31st March 2025, will support a team of six Orthogeriatric and General Internal Medicine consultants who provide a Surgical Liaison service across three Orthopaedic wards at Leeds General Infirmary. A major element of the role will be the provision of high quality perioperative medical care for elderly patients admitted with neck of femur and other fragility fractures, but postholders will also be expected to provide medical advice for younger adults presenting with a wide variety of conditions. Excellent clinical training will therefore be provided in the management of acutely unwell and deteriorating patients, Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, rehabilitation, multidisciplinary teamworking, and discharge planning.

The Trust Doctor will be allocated a named Educational Supervisor with whom they will develop a tailored Personal Development Plan.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will contribute to all aspects of the Orthopaedic Surgical Liaison service. We expect a particular focus on:

The ideal applicant for this position will therefore be able to demonstrate excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills. They will be able to work cooperatively with colleagues across our multidisciplinary teams, managing their time effectively. The successful applicant will be committed to providing expert medical care, including discharge planning, in patients presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.

Opportunities will be provided for education and continuing professional development each week.

The postholder will not be asked to contribute to an out-of-hours rota.

In addition to delivering direct clinical care, the postholder will be expected to provide advice and guidance to Foundation Year 1 and 2 resident doctors undertaking placements in Orthopaedics and Orthogeriatrics. They will also help to develop, and contribute to, our active weekly teaching programme.

DUTIES OF THE POST

To ensure high quality and safe care of patients within the department resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.

To contribute directly to patient care by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations and acting on results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to patients and their relatives/carers about their illness and clinical progress.

To undertake essential administrative duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and liaising with colleagues in primary care.

To contribute to a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied healthcare professionals, including specialist nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and discharge coordinators.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The post-holder will be expected to work at the level of a Registrar (Internal Medicine Year 3 equivalent). They will have access to supervision and support from a Consultant at all times.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
