Job summary
We
are inviting applications for the position of Senior Fellow in Intestinal
failure and Nutrition at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This post is
embedded within the nutrition team, which consists of 4 specialist nurses; 4
specialist dieticians and 5 pharmacists; with administrative support. The team is led by 2 consultant
gastroenterologists, 3 consultant colorectal surgeons and a Professional Lead
(who has extensive intestinal failure experience). The team look after approximately 200
patients on home parenteral nutrition and see between 35 and 65 patients daily
receiving parenteral nutrition in hospital.
These patients are very complex. Inpatients are reviewed regularly, with
parenteral nutrition prescriptions altered to fit the clinical picture. Outpatients frequently also need close
monitoring, and a key part of the job is to help manage this.
Main duties of the job
The
post-holder would be expected to work with the team, but also find educational
opportunities within gastroenterology to match their needs. Other opportunities
to develop skills in general gastroenterology through clinic and endoscopy work
are encouraged. They would also be able
to do more interventional procedures such as gaining more complex venous
access, should this be suitable for them.
There
is no on call associated with this job, which is based on a 40-hour week,
Monday to Friday. Work in the morning
principally involves seeing inpatients receiving parenteral nutrition. Afternoon work will either involve the weekly
clinic/review meeting or seeing drop-in outpatients with line/other issues.
The post is offered as a fixed term 12 months
contract. The post-holder will be
allocated an educational supervisor who will assess progress and help mentor
the successful candidate.

recently been refurbished with state-of-the-art equipment. We provide a wide
range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including bowel cancer
screening, ERCP, interventional EUS, advanced EMR/ESD, stenting, capsule,
double balloon and spiral enteroscopy and biliary manometry.
Our
trainees gain valuable experience in managing complex patients within our
subspecialty services. These include a large IBD service (supported by a team
of IBD nurse specialists and weekly MDT with our radiologists and IBD
surgeons), enteral and parenteral nutrition (including home PN), small bowel
disease and pancreaticobiliary medicine.
There is a strong research background to the unit with
our three academic consultants (Prof. Hull, Prof. Ford and Dr Subramanian). The
research unit is based in the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine (LIMM) on
SJUH site. There are existing research programmes in the molecular biology of
colorectal cancer and IBD and current clinical research projects in IBD and
endoscopy.
