Job summary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust (LTHT), Leeds (United Kingdom) has developed new and exciting themed posts primarily for trainees who have successfully completed their FY2 placements (post-MBBS and internship or equivalent) and wish to complete a Core Surgical Training equivalent within Surgery and especially Trauma and Orthopaedics including Major Trauma, Elective Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and Vascular Surgery.

These posts offer a unique opportunity for applicants to develop their surgical skills alongside experience in other areas such as research and quality/service improvement. Our posts combine education and career development with practical patient-facing care. Successful applicants are assigned an educational and clinical supervisor; have an allocated study leave budget and expected to attend timetabled teaching sessions. Through portfolio preparation, specialist mentoring and the education programme, junior surgical fellows are helped to prepare for ST3 national selection.

The Fellowship has duration of 24 months and the post holder will work for 6 months in each specialty (in Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery, and two of T&O, Major Trauma & Elective Orthopaedics). On completion of the training program it is envisaged that the post holder will be ready to complete the certificate of equivalence of Core Training which will allow him/her to apply for the National Specialty Training Programs (STR) of their choice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in collaboration with and under the direction of the Consultants and other members of the team in the day to day management of inpatients within the service. Duties include ward rounds, assisting the Consultants and senior trainees in the operating theatre, undertaking the pre- and post-operative, with all that this entails and care of patients on the wards. They are expected to attend the A&E Department and deal with any referrals. They may be required to attend outpatient clinics.

The post holder will be part of a residential on call ROTA (1:8) which is compliant with working time regulations and the 2016 junior doctors contract, averaging 48 hours per week.

The post holders will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) within the Trauma and Related Services CSU.
