We
are looking for two enthusiastic individuals to fill two locum consultant posts
working within the Leeds Institute of Emergency General Surgery (LIEGS) at the
St James University Hospital.
Whilst
this is a locum appointment for 6 months, there may be opportunity for this to
be extended.
Leeds
is one of the busiest acute general surgical centres in the UK and as such our
case volume, service design and demonstrated committed investment is ensuring
the unit continues to develop and continues to be at forefront of acute general
surgery services, clinically, educationally and academically in the UK.

The
post will be based at St James University Hospital, Leeds.
Main duties of the job
The
new consultants in Emergency General Surgery will join our existing team of
eight consultants within the department which is led by Professor Giles
Toogood. This innovative, exciting, collaborative and flexible department
manages acute general surgery patients during the day running amongst other
things an Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC), a Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU),
elective Rapid Access and emergency theatres. The successful applicants will be
encouraged to develop their own personal interests which may include training,
teaching, research and management. The unit has developed rapidly over the last
three years but continues to present enormous opportunities in embedding Leeds
as a national leader for innovation, research and service delivery of emergency
and acute care surgery.
The
successful applicant should possess FRCS or equivalent, and should be on the
Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for
trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references
which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical
Director.
Should
have established skills in Emergency General Surgery and its related
specialties including upper GI, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery. A strong
commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest
is desirable. Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full
or part time and those wishing to job share.

trust. We have a number of unique and bespoke pathways to manage this patient
cohort including a dedicated Ambulatory Surgical Centre, a separate Surgical
Assessment Unit, rapid access theatre lists and associated follow up clinics
and remain at the forefront of modern units delivering sub specialist emergency
surgical care in the country. Job plans can be flexible around the individuals
needs but include supervision and training of general surgical trainees and
medical students within the AMS Clinical Service Unit. The role includes
daytime (8.00-16.00) and weekend (8.00-14.00 on a 1:8 to 1:10 basis) working,
without any night-time on call commitment.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1 To deliver high quality, evidence based
and compassionate patient care to emergency general surgery patients in Leeds
and surrounding areas.
2.2 To make a significant contribution to the
development, design, improvement, and delivery of the Acute Surgical Services
in Leeds and surrounding areas, through clinical leadership and collaboration
with other key stakeholders.
2.3 To contribute to research, teaching and
new developments within Emergency General Surgery in Leeds. The post holder
will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical
research programs ongoing in the department
2.4 To support doctors in training within the
department with respect to educational supervision and appraisal and to
contribute to undergraduate teaching of students from the University of Leeds.
