The Paediatric Surgical Department is based within a large teaching hospital, catering for a population of over 1 million people. We deliver care for, and training in, a wide range of Paediatric Surgery specialties, including Upper GI, Thoracics, Oncology, Lower GI, Hepatobiliary Surgery (one of only 3 UK units), Urology and MIS. We have our own equipment to perform robotic surgery and an OR1. We are a designated trauma unit and work alongside colleagues in Liver and Renal Transplantation and in Paediatric Cardiac Surgery. There are 12 consultants, 10 Registrars and 9 other Junior Doctors.

This post will deliver care to paediatric surgical patients on wards, liaising with colleagues in other specialties and hospitals, seeing acutely sick children and clerking in new patient, composing discharge summaries and requesting investigation. There will be opportunity to assist in theatre and clinics as well as providing on-call cover. As the on call LST, you will have support of the resident HST.

Main duties of the job

The Trust Doctor will support in a rolling 9 week shift rota and be involved in covering all aspects of inpatient care including long day ward cover and night shifts. As a lower specialty trainee, this post will be covered by a higher surgical trainee. During the other weeks you will be involved in other aspects of the paediatric surgical service, including attending outpatient clinics, theatres and performing audits and will also have exposure to other activities within the department.

LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY

The post holder will support the on call rota equivalent to ST1/2. The post holder will be rotated to cover the paediatric surgical ward on 42, surgical newborn unit, outliers, A&E and CAT units and theatres or clinics. This gives all trainees an opportunity to see the breadth of patients in paediatric surgery and manage them both in an elective setting and a sick child.

There are several theatre lists both emergency and elective lists that happen on a daily basis and several clinics that happen daily. Trainees are encouraged to go to any of these as per their choice and availability. All trainees are allocated a clinical supervisor within the department and if they do not have an educational supervisor in their rotation are allocated one within the department as well.

All trainees should attend the daily morning handover at 8:00- 8:30am and join the ward round if they are not going to either theatre or clinic.
