SPECIALIST
GRADE IN Urology
1. BACKGROUND

Leeds

WYAAT
is the acute sector arm of the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care
Partnership, one of the largest integrated care systems in the country. The

This
is a 5 month fixed-term post for a Specialist Doctor working within the Urology
Department based at St Jamess University Hospital.
2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
The
successful candidate will assist the urology department in the delivery of
elective and non-elective urology including outpatient clinics, diagnostics and
surgical procedures in line with gained competencies.
2.2
Support general and specialist
outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, and day-case surgery.
2.3
Contribute to weekly departmental
and specialist multidisciplinary meetings, x-ray meetings and monthly audit
meetings.
2.4
Participate in any on-going clinical
trials to facilitate the collection and analysis of clinical data.
2.5
Participate in the teaching of
medical students and clinical supervision of juniors.
2.6
Collaborate in clinical research and
submit an article for presentation where possible.
2.7 In addition to providing surgical stone
treatments, to also be involved in the provision of Lithotripsy.
2.8 Contribute to an On Call rota within the
department.
This
post does not have Postgraduate Deans approval. However, study leave expenses
may be available to the post holder for appropriate purposes.
3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST
3.1 Training and Qualifications
MBBS
or equivalent medical qualification.
Evidence
of achievement of ST1/CT1 competences in a relevant specialty at time of
application and likelihood of achieving ST2/CT2 competences in a relevant
specialty by the start date of the post.
3.2 Experience
A
generic capabilities framework for the Specialist grade has been developed in
partnership between the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, the British Medical
Association and NHS Employers. It outlines the core capabilities and skills
expected across all specialties for safe working practices at this Specialist
grade. The terms and conditions for the Specialist grade state that doctors
will need to evidence they meet these criteria to successfully enter the grade.
The
appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and
competence in Urology, which includes technical and clinical competence. They
must also be able to demonstrate the development of diagnostic skills and
clinical judgement.
3.3 Personal Attributes
Practises
with the professional values and behaviours expected of all doctors as set out
in GMC Good Medical Practice and the Generic Professional Capabilities
Framework (or equivalent for dentists).
The
appointee will have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are
adequate to enable effective communications about medical topics with patients
and colleagues. See Person

He/She
will have an understanding of current NHS management and Trusts and be aware of
the responsibilities that a specialist doctor post brings.
3.4 Clinical Audit
Critically
appraises and synthesises the outcomes of audit, inquiries, critical incidents
or complaints and implements appropriate changes. This includes contributing to
Audit meetings, mortality and morbidity meetings and application of agreed
clinical guidelines.
Expected
to routinely engage in relevant activities in their specialty that are focussed
on quality improvement. This participation
should be reflected at annual appraisal and job planning and will be discussed
in specialties as part of clinical governance programmes and meetings.
4. TEACHING
The
Trust is a Teaching Hospital and therefore considers the active participation medical
staff in teaching and training to be part of our core activities. Not medical staff will have regular and
substantial teaching commitments, but all will be involved in related
activities from time to time, if only through informal opportunities, for
example as part of service quality improvement. It is therefore expected that
all doctors will be familiar with the principles of effective teaching and will
enable the service and colleagues to fulfil their obligations to learn and
teach about effective care.
The
Trust actively supports and encourages medical staff to participate in and
deliver teaching and training to any colleagues, within and outside of the
Trust, where this is agreed as an appropriate time commitment.
