Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, engaging and committed Trust Grade Doctor (ST3-5) to join the NIHR Leeds Clinical Research Facility as a Clinical Research Fellow in Cardiology. We are seeking to recruit a full-time Clinical Research Fellow to work within the LGI NIHR CRF site with a focus on cardiovascular research. This post is for a fixed-term of three years. The LGI NIHR CRF site infrastructure hosts investigator-led and industry sponsored clinical trials, and features state of the art facilities to conduct clinical research. This is the first post of its kind, designed to support our growing team of healthcare scientists. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to pursue their own research interests and will be expected to enrol for a higher degree at the University of Leeds. During their employment the successful candidate may also work towards applying for an externally funded PhD fellowship.

Main duties of the job

The individual will be expected to perform duties and take clinical responsibility to ST3-5 level, which includes supporting the delivery of clinical trials conducted at the LGI CVCRF. The Fellow will be expected to serve as sub-investigator for research studies/clinical trials under the supervision of the respective Principal Investigator. The specific duties of the Fellow will depend on individual trials but usually include taking informed consent, assessment against eligibility criteria, assessment of disease activity and severity, assessment and reporting of adverse events, supervision of administration of the investigational medicinal product (IMP), performing and reporting investigational procedures and providing medical/emergency cover for research participants attending the CRF. It is expected that the fellow will be supporting several studies concurrently.

St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) CRF: Located on level 3, Bexley Wing Our largest, state-of-the-art CRF facility (established 2020) delivers high quality early phase experimental medicine research in oncology, haematology and immunology as well as other specialities, supporting day-care, outpatient clinics and overnight stays. The self-contained CRF is co-located with easy access to multiple support services and provides a total of 18 bed/treatment spaces (3 bays, 2 en-suite single side rooms) and 4 outpatient rooms with facilities for virtual and face-to-face clinics. The CRF supports interventional procedures, complex sampling procedures and specimen storage in two purpose built Good Clinical Laboratory Practice laboratories (-80OC and -20OC Freezers; Class II Biological Safety Cabinet) with trained technical staff. Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) CRF: Located on level 7, Jubilee Wing The LGI CRF (established 2014) is located within the Yorkshire Heart Centre and has a specialist focus on cardiovascular diseases, but also supports other on-site specialities such as neuroscience research. The self-contained CRF is co-located with easy access to multiple support services and provides a total of 4 treatment bed/chairs for outpatient visits, day-care and overnight stays. The CRF has a dedicated cardio-pulmonary assessment area, two clinical consultation/examination rooms and a patient discussion/consent room. The CRF also has a small sample preparation and storage laboratory as well as an exercise physiology laboratory with respiratory gas analysis area. Other facilities include a dedicated ultrasound imaging rooms and clinical physiology measurement room. Leeds Childrens Hospital (LCH) CRF: Located on C Floor, Clarendon Wing Purpose built, self-contained CRF located within the Leeds Childrens Hospital and supporting delivery of experimental medicine research in a comprehensive range of illnesses, from antenatal conditions through to adult variants of childhood diseases. Leeds is designated as a Clinical Trial Accelerator Platform by UK Cystic Fibrosis Trust and supports the delivery of oncology trials with the co-located Leeds Paediatric Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre (ECMC). The CRF has a four bedded bay and two en-suite single rooms. DenTCRU CRF: Located in the Leeds Dental Institute Purpose built self-contained, state-of-the-art dental CRF located in the Leeds Dental Hospital (LGI campus) with direct access to acute services and emergency care. DenTCRU CRF has six high specification dental chairs with operating microscopes, surgical scrub sinks and intra-oral digital cameras for digital photography and controlled lighting for colour matching and tooth whitening studies.
