Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to fill a maternity-cover post working within the Leeds Institute of Emergency General Surgery (LIEGS) at the St Jamess University Hospital. Leeds is one of the busiest acute general surgical centres in the UK and as such our case volume, service design and demonstrated committed investment is ensuring the unit continues to develop and continues to be at forefront of acute general surgery services, clinically, educationally and academically in the UK.

The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their own personal interests which may include training, teaching, research and management. The unit has developed rapidly over the last three years but continues to present enormous opportunities in embedding Leeds as a national leader for innovation, research and service delivery of emergency and acute care surgery.

The successful applicant should possess FRCS or equivalent, and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

About us

Leeds is one of the busiest acute general surgical centres in the UK and as such our case volume, service design and demonstrated committed investment is ensuring the unit continues to develop and continues to be at forefront of acute general surgery services, clinically, educationally and academically in the UK.

As well as having one of the highest numbers of laparotomies per annum (NELA), attendance in our SAU had risen by over 30% prior to the establishment of the EGS service. Novel pathways to modernise these services have been vital. The unit therefore manages patient flow dynamically and has developed new ambulatory care pathways including local anaesthetic abscess management and instituted ambulatory diagnostic and management strategies to effectively manage and support patient care. The take is split between two emergency general surgery consultants during daytime hours who are supported overnight by the existing body.

Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles. As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.
