JUNIOR CLINICAL FELLOW (LST/ST1-2 EQUIVALENT) IN NEUROSURGERY

We are inviting applications to fill our Junior Clinical Fellow vacancy in The Department of Neurosurgery at Leeds General Infirmary, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust is the largest NHS Trust in the UK and is a Tertiary Regional Centre of Excellence for Neurosurgery.

With 4 neurosurgical operating theatres, 14 dedicated neurosurgical intensive care and HDU beds and 4 neurosurgical wards, the neurosurgical unit has the capacity to perform over 3000 operations per year. The full spectrum of cranial, spinal, and paediatric neurosurgery is undertaken.

Posts will commence August2022, initially for 6 months, however there is the potential to extend to a 12-month position, subject to satisfactory progress and review. The start date is negotiable.

Main duties of the job

These posts are Trust, non-training posts paid on the Specialty Registrar salary scale.

The successful candidate will undertake routine pre- and post-operative care of neurosurgery patients on the wards and in the neurosurgical high-dependency unit. There will be opportunities to attend out-patient clinics as well as gain experience in neurosurgical theatres. The post-holder will gain experience in all aspects of neurosurgery and will contribute to the out of hours on call rota.

There is an ongoing academic program including journal clubs and a weekly Departmental teaching.

The Trust has a well-stocked library and there is access to the Universitys library as well.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of the intended start date. They must also hold a valid ALS certificate.

About us

The Department of Neurosurgery provides a comprehensive neurosurgical service to around 3 million people in West and North Yorkshire. The Neurosurgical Department is within the new development at The Leeds General Infirmary at Leeds. This is an amalgamation of the previous separate units at the Leeds Infirmary and the Pinderfields General Hospital, Wakefield. The department has an excellent reputation for training and recent trust grade trainees have been successful in securing national training positions in neurosurgery at S1-3 levels.

The centralised Neurosurgical Department has approximately 50 adult beds with a 7-bedded dedicated Neuro-intensive Care Unit as well as an 8 bedded High Dependency Unit. There are 4 operating theatres, 1 dedicated to emergency surgery 24 hours per day. There are separate beds and intensive care facilities for Paediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery

Job responsibilities

The Neurosurgical Department has close links with the other neurosciences, particularly the Department of Neuro-radiology where there is high expertise in imaging and interventional neuroradiology. The Department has 3 CT scanners, 3 MRI scanners, digital subtraction angiography and CT angiography. There is a recently opened hybrid theatre with intra-operative MRI.

Neuro-anaesthesia is provided at a specialist level. The Neuro-anaesthetists provide support to both the High Dependency and Intensive Care Unit.

The Neuro-pathology Department for Yorkshire is on site and provides a full histological and post-mortem service. There are facilities for inter-operative histopathology.

There are close links with the ENT Department for Neuro-otological procedure. There are also close links with the Maxillo-facial, Plastic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Spinal surgeons.

There is a comprehensive Paediatric Neurosciences Department with 5 Paediatric Neurologists, 3 specialist Neurosurgeons and full Oncology services.

The Department's work has continued to increase over the past years. The current caseload is some 3000 in-patients per year and approximately 2000 operative cases per year.

DUTIES OF THE POST and Levels of responsibility

Clinical

Ward work. Attend daily business ward rounds, clerk routine admissions and to implement the instructions of the senior medical staff. Ensure that elective and acute patients are appropriately prepared for the operating theatre. Ensure that post-operative care in the adult ward and the High Dependency Unit is undertaken accordingly. Take part in the on call full shift system rota.

Operating

Under senior guidance, the Junior Clinical Fellows will have the opportunity to perform some emergency and elective operations. Attendance at routine operating is encouraged.

Out-Patients

Junior Clinical Fellows should attend the follow-up clinics are encouraged to attend new patient clinics primarily for teaching purposes.

Administration

Junior Clinical Fellows assist in the preparation of discharge summaries and for coding data for audit purposes.

Teaching

Instructing nursing staff. Assisting of 5th year medical students during their neurosurgical clerkships is also encouraged.

Research

Opportunities to pursue individual line of research or assist in those already in progress in the department. Encouragement will be given to prepare reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

STUDY AND TRAINING

This is a non-training post. However, the experience gained will be the same as the trainees. The post-holder will get equal access to training opportunities including access to theatres and clinics and neuro-HDU on an equal rotational basis.

Within the Department, there are regular weekly academic Neuroscience meetings as well as weekly Neuro-radiological and Neuro-pathology meetings. There is also a monthly audit meeting of morbidity, mortality and specific audit topics.

There is a medical library in the Postgraduate Centre with appropriate computer linkage for literature searches. The Clinical Fellow will be encouraged to take part in the on-going research projects and every encouragement will be given to any individual projects.
