Job responsibilities
The
Neurosurgical Department has close links with the other neurosciences,
particularly the Department of Neuro-radiology where there is high expertise in
imaging and interventional neuroradiology.
The Department has 3 CT scanners, 3 MRI scanners, digital subtraction
angiography and CT angiography. There is a recently opened hybrid theatre with
intra-operative MRI.
Neuro-anaesthesia
is provided at a specialist level. The
Neuro-anaesthetists provide support to both the High Dependency and Intensive
Care Unit.
The
Neuro-pathology Department for Yorkshire is on site and provides a full
histological and post-mortem service.
There are facilities for inter-operative histopathology.
There
are close links with the ENT Department for Neuro-otological procedure. There are also close links with the
Maxillo-facial, Plastic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Spinal surgeons.
There
is a comprehensive Paediatric Neurosciences Department with 5 Paediatric
Neurologists, 3 specialist Neurosurgeons and full Oncology services.
The
Department's work has continued to increase over the past years. The current caseload is some 3000 in-patients
per year and approximately 2000 operative cases per year.
DUTIES
OF THE POST and Levels of responsibility
Clinical
Ward
work. Attend daily business ward rounds, clerk routine admissions and to
implement the instructions of the senior medical staff. Ensure that elective
and acute patients are appropriately prepared for the operating theatre. Ensure that post-operative care in the adult
ward and the High Dependency Unit is undertaken accordingly. Take part in the on
call full shift system rota.
Operating
Under
senior guidance, the Junior Clinical Fellows will have the opportunity to
perform some emergency and elective operations.
Attendance at routine operating is encouraged.
Out-Patients
Junior
Clinical Fellows should attend the follow-up clinics are encouraged to attend
new patient clinics primarily for teaching purposes.
Administration
Junior
Clinical Fellows assist in the preparation of discharge summaries and for
coding data for audit purposes.
Teaching
Instructing
nursing staff. Assisting of 5th year
medical students during their neurosurgical clerkships is also encouraged.
Research
Opportunities
to pursue individual line of research or assist in those already in progress in
the department. Encouragement will be
given to prepare reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
STUDY
AND TRAINING
This
is a non-training post. However, the experience gained will be the same as the
trainees. The post-holder will get equal
access to training opportunities including access to theatres and clinics and
neuro-HDU on an equal rotational basis.
Within
the Department, there are regular weekly academic Neuroscience meetings as well
as weekly Neuro-radiological and Neuro-pathology meetings. There is also a monthly audit meeting of
morbidity, mortality and specific audit topics.
There
is a medical library in the Postgraduate Centre with appropriate computer
linkage for literature searches. The
Clinical Fellow will be encouraged to take part in the on-going research
projects and every encouragement will be given to any individual projects.
TEACHING
AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING
Instructing

CONDITIONS
OF SERVICE
This
post is covered by the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (England and Wales)

The
post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council
(GMC) and hold a licence to practice.
Standards
of Conduct and Behaviour
You
are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in
Good Medical Practice. This includes
protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other colleagues
conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it is
necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform
your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.
Your
general conduct at work should comply with the standards set out in the Trusts
document on Appraisal, in particular the section on Core Behaviours.
Leave
Arrangements
All
leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy,
normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional
circumstances.
Training
During
the course of your employment, you agree to undergo whatever training the Trust
deems necessary. This may include, but
is not limited to, induction training, professional development and safe
working practices. Funding of such
training will be in accordance with the Trusts Staff Development Policy.

position involves access to patients during the normal course of duties and is
therefore subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order)
