Applications
are invited for Clinical Fellow (CF) positions within the Specialty and
Integrated Medicine Care Clinical Service Unit at St Jamess University
Hospital, Leeds. They are ideally suited to junior doctors who have completed
Internal Medicine Training but who have yet to decide their chosen career
pathway or who are not yet ready to enter a formal Higher Specialty Training
scheme.
Our
CF posts, which are fixed-term for 12-months, are designed to provide excellent
clinical training in Acute and General Internal Medicine, Elderly Medicine,
Diabetes and Endocrinology, and Infectious Diseases. Experience in Stroke
Medicine can also be provided.
Successful
applicants will be given an opportunity to work within our Same Day Emergency
Care service, on our Acute Medical Units, on our in-patient wards, and in our
new Centre for Reconditioning. Training can also be provided for interested
candidates on the Hyperacute and Acute Stroke Units (based at Leeds General
Infirmary).
In
addition, post-holders will be asked to contribute to our exciting Research and
Innovation (R&I) programme, and will be supported to develop a specialist
interest in one (or more) of the following areas:
(a) Medical Management
(b) Quality Improvement
(c) Research
(d) Teaching and education
(e) Simulation
Each CF will be allocated a named Educational
Supervisor with whom they will develop a tailored training and R&I plan.
This will involve an 80% : 20% split between clinical duties .
Main duties of the job
Post-holders
will contribute to all aspects of the Specialty and Integrated Medicine
service. We expect a particular focus on:
Good clinical care;
Maintaining good medical practice;
Good relationships and communication
with patients;
Good working relationships with
colleagues;
Good teaching and training;
Professional behaviour and probity.
The
ideal applicants for these positions will therefore be able to demonstrate
excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills. They will be able
to work cooperatively with colleagues across our multidisciplinary teams,
managing their time effectively. The successful applicants will be committed to
providing expert medical care, including discharge planning, in patients
presenting with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
In
addition to specialist interest time, opportunities will be provided for education
and continuing professional development each week.
Post-holders
will be asked to contribute to an out-of-hours rota providing cover for SDEC
and medical admissions.
About us
You
will join the Specialty and Integrated Medicine (SIM) and Urgent Care Clinical
Service Units (CSUs) at St Jamess University Hospital (SJUH) which together
cover Acute Internal Medicine, General Internal Medicine, Elderly Medicine,
Diabetes & Endocrinology, and Infectious Diseases & Travel Medicine.
Although post-holders will undertake most of their clinical duties within their
chosen parent specialty, they may be asked to contribute to the care of
patients in all these areas from time-to-time.
Our
department at SJUH is currently based across Chancellors Wing and Gledhow Wing.
It comprises four Acute Medical Units (one of which incorporates a High
Observation Unit (HOBS)), a Same Day Emergency Care service (with both a
Medical Unit and Older Persons Unit), two General Medicine / Diabetes &
Endocrinology wards, five Elderly Medicine wards, and an Infectious Diseases
& Travel Medicine Unit.

DUTIES
OF THE POST
To ensure high quality and safe care of
patients within the department resulting in excellent clinical outcomes.
To contribute directly to patient care
by, for example, reviewing patients, organising investigations and acting on
results, initiating and changing treatment, and speaking to patients and their
relatives/carers about their illness and clinical progress.
To undertake essential administrative
duties, including prescribing, writing electronic discharge letters, and
liaising with colleagues in primary care.
To contribute to a multidisciplinary
approach to patient care, working collaboratively with a large team of allied
healthcare professionals, including the Early Discharge Assessment Team,
specialist nurses and physiotherapists.
You will be provided with a tailored
job plan in which 20% of your time will be allocated to non-clinical duties to
allow you to pursue a specialist interest in (a) teaching and education, (b)
simulation, (c) research, or (d) quality Improvement.
LEVELS
OF RESPONSIBILITY
The
post-holder will be expected to work at the level of a Registrar. They will
have access to supervision and support from a Consultant at all times.
TEACHING
