Job summary
We
are looking for 2 Locum Consultants to work in 50:50 split posts between the
Paediatric Intensive Care Department at Leeds General Infirmary and Embrace,
Yorkshire and Humber Infant and Childrens Transport Service hosted by
Sheffield Childrens Hospital. These
posts will support both services pending new substantive appointments as part
of the workforce development plan for the future. The Government has supported
the bid to build a new Childrens Hospital in Leeds (Build the Leeds Way)
aiming to be home to one of the leading health care institutions in the world,
excelling in patient care, teaching and research. Building works have already
begun and the aim is for the new Hospital to be complete by 2029.
These posts are 10 PA locum appointments split 50:50
between PCCU and Embrace for a Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant, with a
special interest in Transport as well as General and Cardiac Intensive Care.
The posts involve 5 PAs on Paediatric Critical Care with an additional 5 PAs
offered by Embrace.
Main duties of the job
-Contribution

Medical and Surgical Cardiac patients
-Manage
patients on Extracorporeal Life Support
Manage
Specialist surgery patients including Neurosurgery; Spinal surgery; Liver
transplant and Renal transplant
-Be
familiar with equipment, operational policies and staffing levels/competencies
-Liaise
with Embrace and DGH colleagues regarding admission of Time Critical and other
referrals
-Contribution
to Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Governance meetings as well as PCCU department
and Governance meetings
Embrace Transport service
-Take
clinical and managerial responsibility for the transport service while on duty
-Be
familiar with equipment, operational policies and staffing levels/competencies
-Facilitate
conference calls for patients requiring immediate high priority transfer
-Provide
initial advice; facilitate conference call between referring clinician,
identified accepting unit consultant and any other specialist required
-Triage
calls to determine the composition of the transport team
-Provide
advice to the transport team on the management of the transfer
-Perform
transfers including when patient acuity dictates a consultant level of care
-Support
training and development, including supervised transports, for new members of
the team
About us
The
Paediatric Critical Care at the Leeds General Infirmary is the regional lead
centre. The Unit admits approximately 700 PICU patients and 350 HDU patients a
year of which approximately 150 are retrieved from our referring district
general hospitals by Embrace, the regional paediatric and neonatal retrieval
service. The Paediatric Critical Care supports a wide range of services
including cardiac, neurosurgery and liver transplant. Cardiac surgery accounts
for over 350 cases per year. The LGI is a major neurology / neurosurgical
centre with trauma, spinal, oncology and craniofacial surgical interests and is
also the trauma and paediatric surgical centre for the city. Paediatric
Critical Care also supports the onsite tertiary specialities including haematology,
oncology, bone marrow transplant and nephrology. We are also one of the 3 liver
transplant centres in the country.

and Embrace to deliver acute on call (this is currently 1 in 9 for both PCCU
and Embrace). This includes acute ward rounds and unit management during normal
working hours and regular out of hours commitment on the on-call rota. The
workload will be split between PCCU and Embrace such that you will work full
time at either service for a period of approximately 3-6 months. There is
flexibility within this in order to support both services and ensure a balanced
post.

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist
teams within
the Childrens Hospital and across the
Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and
with colleagues in District General
hospitals, Sheffield Childrens Hospital
Foundation Trust and other regional
transport services.
2.4 To contribute to infection control,
research, teaching and new developments within the Paediatric Critical Care
Unit and Embrace. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and
contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in both services.
SPA time will be equally split between the two services.
