Job summary

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Gynaecologist at St Jamess Hospital, Leeds. The post will be available immediately for a period of 6 months initially, although there is scope for an extension for a further 6 months pending approval.

This post has been developed to meet increased patient demand for the benign Gynaecology service in Leeds and is an excellent opportunity to work in a large tertiary centre in a high quality and recently refurbished outpatient and inpatient environment. We would particularly welcome applications from candidates with enhanced surgical and laparoscopic skills.

There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to develop a specialist interest within their job plan, following discussion with the Department.

The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital.

The successful applicant should be a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists MRCOG and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Main duties of the job

Applicants should have established skills in benign Gynaecology. Excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential.

The post involves a 1:10 on-call commitment.

This post is a locum post for a period of 6 months with a possibility of extension to 12 months.

1. BACKGROUND

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Gynaecologist. The post will be based at St Jamess University Hospital.

This is a new post and has been developed to address an increase in demand for the service. Specifically this post requires applicants with enhanced surgical and laparoscopic skills.

Womens CSU

Womens Clinical Service Unit in Leeds provides comprehensive secondary care for the local population and enjoys a position as a regional centre for all subspecialties. There are 33 Consultants within the Womens Clinical Service Unit,

Gynaecology

The team comprises of 14 consultants, including this post, of which 10 contribute to the gynaecology on call rota. There is also a large team of consultant nurse specialists who deliver clinical expertise in sub-specialty areas of Urogynaecology, Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy, Endometriosis and Reproductive Medicine. The CSU provides a full secondary and tertiary service for Leeds, Yorkshire and significant parts of the North of England.

In 2015 a new development housing the Leeds Centre for Womens Health comprising the the gynaecology acute treatment unit (GATU) which incorporates early pregnancy care, and ward J24 at St Jamess which was the dedicated gynaecology ward. This has been the fulcrum for modernising pathways, increasing productivity and reducing length of stay.

In 2017 our outpatient facility was upgraded, located close to the inpatient unit, and enabling the team to undertake more procedures in the outpatient setting and with the necessary facilities for assessment, diagnosis and treatment, often on the same day. This department has recently incorporated gynaecology ultrasound scanning facilities to streamline the pathway. This hub is the home of the gynaecology nurse specialists, who already deliver a higher volume of nurse-led diagnosis and treatment clinics than any other centre nationally.

We work closely with community gynaecology services and launched the Integrated Gynaecology Service in partnership Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust in 2018, this has been very successful and enabled both teams to care for patients in the right setting.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

2.1 To deliver care to Gynaecology patients in:

Outpatient clinics

Operating Theatres - enhanced and laparoscopic surgical skills required

Supervision of patients

Care of in-patients on an acute Gynaecology rota (1 in 10)

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

2.2 To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within LTHT and across the West Yorkshire region.

2.3 To work with colleagues in Gynaecology to deliver acute on call (currently 1 in 10) and cover the gynaecology acute treatment unit (GATU) during hotweeks (1 in 9).

3. REQUIREMENTS OF THE POST

3.1 General Training and Qualifications

The appointee must be a MBBS and a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists or equivalent, and have completed higher specialist training (or equivalent) if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK, or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants must provide information regarding their status from the GMC and/or relevant Royal College at the time of application, in order for their application to be progressed further.

3.2 Experience

The appointee must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and appropriate experience in benign Gynaecology. It is desirable that the candidates have experience in the conduct of clinical trials.

3.4 Clinical Audit

The appointee will be expected to contribute and, where appropriate, take the lead in the following:

Mortality and morbidity meetings;

Clinical audit programmes;

Development and application of agreed clinical guidelines.

This is to be included in allocated time in the individuals job plan as a supporting programmed activity. It would be expected that the time allocated for this would include attendance at the relevant departmental audit meeting(s) and that such attendance would be recorded (in accordance with the Trusts clinical audit policy).

In the discharge of these responsibilities the candidate will be expected to maintain and update his/her skills and knowledge through appropriate continuing medical education.

4. TEACHING

The Trust as a teaching hospital recognises the importance of links with the University of Leeds, School of Medicine for the undergraduate teaching and all Consultant and medical staff are required to provide an appropriate contribution to the undergraduate teaching programme.

The post-holder will be required to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme for the school of Medicine, University of Leeds, which is organised on a speciality or clinical area basis.

The post-holder will be required to collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate undergraduate teaching in accordance with the Trust contract with the NHS Executive in association with the University of Leeds.

The appointee will be expected, with colleagues to also contribute to the teaching of postgraduates, including the teaching programme for SpRs in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Local Education and Training Board.

5. JOB PLAN AND WORKING ARRANGEMENTS

The job plan review will take place annually, normally with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician for Gynaecology. The annual job plan review may result in a revised job plan. There may be an interim review of the job plan where duties, responsibilities, accountability arrangements or objectives have changed or need to change significantly within the area.

5.1 Proposed Job Plan

The post consists of 10PAs with 8.5PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5PAs of supporting professional activity (SPA). These 10PAs will be delivered in theatres, outpatients and on the Gynaecology Assessment and Treatment Unit, Early Pregnancy Unit and the Gynaecology ward.

This job plan will fit together with colleagues job-plans with a careful rota of clinical sessions, to ensure robust cover.
