Job summary

The Education and Simulation Technician will work as part of a small team within Medical Education, organising and supporting post graduate training courses for Resident Doctors. The post holder is expected to provide technical assistance throughout the duration of courses, whether it be problem solving audio-visual equipment, preparing animal tissue for surgical teaching, or providing the ongoing operation of high-fidelity simulation manikins and technology alongside teaching faculty.

The Technician will also work alongside the course administration team and porters on a day-to-day basis within the Clinical Practice Centre to ensure that requirements are met for any given event. This also involves working with external stakeholders who provide equipment and sponsorship for courses.

In addition, the technician will oversee day-to-day teaching within the Clinical Practice Centre and work under the supervision of the Lead Education and Simulation Technician.

The post holder, whilst primarily based at St Jamess University Hospital, will also be expected to occasionally support teaching at Leeds General Infirmary.

This post will be a 12-month fixed term contract with the potential to made permanent.

Main duties of the job

To prepare simulation manikins and consumables within the allocated room in accordance with the requirements provided by the course administrators and teaching faculty.

Ongoing support during courses with high-fidelity equipment such as operating the 3G SimMan for adult emergency scenarios. This involves using specialist software to control the manikins observations and physical settings, depending on the scenario plan set out by the faculty. Also involves the use monitoring network cameras within a 4 bedded ward area to stream the scenarios into another room for other doctors and faculty to observe.

For lower fidelity teaching, the Technician may be required to problem solve computer hardware and software issues ad-hoc.

Running scenarios with simulation equipment within clinical settings across the hospital, such as A&E, operating theatres, or ICU. This applies across both St Jamess University Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary.

Documents highlighting all requirements of courses are to be kept accurate and up to date for future proofing and consistency of the teaching provided. These may include images, diagrams, written descriptions, and tables of the items used.

To regularly check the condition of simulation equipment used and repair and replace parts when appropriate. Depending on the complexity of the issue, some repairs may require contacting product manufacturers.

Working as part of a small team within the Medical Education support services team the Education and Simulation Technicians support the Lead Education and Simulation Technician in providing an advanced, comprehensive wide range of technical support for educational delivery and events at Medical Education Leeds and across the Leeds Teaching Hospital estate. The post holder will make sure that teaching areas are fully prepared for education. This includes ensuring audio visual equipment, medical meat (animal tissue), part task trainers, complex simulation devices and virtual reality kit is prepared and available for educational delivery in classroom and clinical teaching areas.

They will support users in the use of a variety of complex clinical skills simulators and models.

The Education and Simulation Technician will be involved in the development of educational courses and offer expert advice to faculty and Course Directors and assist in the preparation and development of Clinical Skills and simulation technology and kit. They will also provide expert guidance on failing equipment and escalate the need for replacement equipment.

The Education and Simulation Technician provides a flexible approach to working and support for a wide range of educational events including virtual educational delivery. They will deputise for the Lead Technician when required to ensure continuity of service. The Education and Simulation Technician will be an excellent team member with effective communication skills across all platforms and work alongside the wider Medical Education Team. They will be able to provide expert technical advice and support service users, faculty, and course directors in the development of new courses/educational events.

The Education and Simulation technician will have the ability to make decisions that are not always straight forward and may have multiple factors to consider.

The Technician will be able to work autonomously and be able to trouble shoot and problem solve. They will be able to independently support in- situ education delivery across the trust in a variety of clinical areas, and provide high quality customer service to educators, faculty, trainees, and the wider educational team during educational delivery.

They will maintain the high standards of customer service within the Medical Education Service and ensure a high level of quality in all aspects of their work.

The post holder will produce high quality comprehensive written technical guides for educational events and courses, and ensure they are kept up to date. They will be responsible for the ordering of kit and consumables for across the MEL estate, and arranging the maintenance and repair of manikins, complex clinical skills simulators, and Virtual reality kit. They will be able to forge good relationships with corporate industry representatives to ensure a high-quality technical service delivery.

The technician will also complete financial sheets and be able to use ZOOM, Microsoft packages including MS teams to ensure the work calendar and Clinical Skills and Simulation Monthly matrix is kept updated.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

To be responsible/oversees the set-up of teaching rooms and teaching resources & ensures that all kit for courses is available and in full working order for Medical Education courses and events.

Works alongside the wider Clinical skills and simulation team in the planning set up, delivery and set down of medical education courses.

Can work independently in the set up and set down of complex laparoscopic surgical courses, Bootcamps, RCS courses, HEE Regional courses and Simulation courses.

Ensures the course calendar is kept up to date.

Produces high quality comprehensive technical guides for each course.

Can support in-situ within a variety of clinical areas independently and effectively.

Liaises and communicates with industry representatives in the supply of kit and for kit maintenance and repair. Always maintains a professional manner whilst representing Medical Education Leeds Assist in the day to day running of the Wet Lab, including ordering, preparing and cleaning of animal tissue and working to the health and safety policy guidelines.

Operates, maintains, and manages the simulation mannequins/kit/cameras during and in preparation for courses. Troubleshoots and assists when technical issues arise.

Supports faculty, trainees and clinicians in the use of the equipment.

e.g. virtual reality simulators, 3G sim man and provides comprehensive training to staff to optimise equipment use

Advises and provides technical kit costing for new course development and to the wider directorate team.

Ensure adequate stocks of instruments, equipment and consumables by means of regular stocktaking.

Assist and familiarize with the trust ordering of supplies and equipment producing and regular updating of inventories.

Records the use of consumables on finance sheets.

To effectively work as part of a team with the wider Medical Education team to ensure the successful efficient smooth running of the Department and educational events
