Job summary

This is a fixed term contract role with an initial contract end date of 31 March 2025 (extension anticipated).

We are looking for a candidate who has an understanding of designing and measuring outcomes and impacts of health research-related programmes, practical knowledge in Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning framework and applications of relevant evaluation tools.

The Impact and Evaluation Manager will work alongside two Senior Impact Managers and a Senior Impact Officer, to support the delivery of NIHRs strategic ambitions with respect to impact.

In this role, you will work with other team members and develop and manage a variety of impact assessment tasks including case studies, logic models, data management and evaluation of the schemes and programmes that form part of the NIHRs portfolio to demonstrate the difference NIHR makes to the health sector and the wider society in the country.

Main duties of the job

Your role will help us to build on, and strengthen our resources dedicated to this.

We use a number of ways to demonstrate impact, and you will be instrumental in supporting this. Within NIHR Academy you will provide support with the identification and development of impact case studies, and you will take a lead role in planning and delivering impact focused evaluation activities. We work closely with impact colleagues across NIHR coordinating centres and you will take a significant role in building relationships, and delivering on impact related workstreams across NIHR.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is required to work flexibly across the organisation; the portfolio of programmes and schemes that they manage is likely to vary over time as will the balance of administrative and managerial duties.

Impact development and management

  • Prepare and provide guidance for Impact assessment pathways for programmes and awards;
  • Responsible for production, and validation, of case studies, impact portfolio of NIHR Academy schemes and programmes;
  • Using qualitative and quantitative methods and analysis, take the lead in delivering smaller evaluations and, offer support on larger evaluations of NIHR programmes and initiatives;
  • Liaise with external stakeholders and other funders to monitor and track progression of NIHR Academy award holders;
  • Manage change in response to external events and new policies; this may require the reformulation and adjustment of plans and strategies to ensure that the impact assessments for programmes and projects in the post holders portfolio remain fit for purpose;
  • Provide support for the development of impact assessment methods for the portfolio of NIHR Academy programmes;
  • Work with the NIHR Academy Executive Board to plan and implement the process for administering the schemes in the post holders area of responsibility;
  • Play a key role in planning the annual cycle and timing of Impact reports and assessments in the post holders area of responsibility;
  • Represent NIHR Academy Executive, by taking a lead on cross-NIHR Impact related projects and other collaborative activities;
  • Responsible for adapting / designing information systems, such as the NIHR Academy case study identification tool, to meet the specifications of others;
  • Write reports, working papers, and prepare slide decks as required; and

  • Maintain regular liaison with wider NIHR Impact groups and keep the NIHR Academy Executive Board informed of work progress or any issues;
  • Publicise the NIHR Academy activities through attendance and presentations at external meetings, seminars and conferences;
  • Deal with a range of people nationally at all levels of seniority both internal and external to the NIHR Academy in line with DHSC policies;
  • Organise workshops and stakeholder meetings as required;
  • Generate and maintain strong nationally- based networks and positive working relationships within HEIs, CCGs and other health-related organisations, particularly at the level of senior research leaders/sponsors to benefit the NIHR Academy programmes;
  • Contribute to briefings requested from Ministers offices and other government departments;
  • Liaise with members of the NIHR Academy Executive Board and Senior Programme Managers in order to meet responsibilities and undertake duties effectively;and
  • Work closely with the NIHR Academy Evaluation, Business Intelligence and Impact team to ensure that they have sufficient Impact information to be able to respond quickly to Information Requests, Parliamentary questions and long term analysis.
