2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY
As
part of the Dental engineering team based at Leeds Dental Institute:
To maintain and repair, test and
calibrate dental and associated equipment in the Leeds Dental Institute and
satellite clinics. Notably this includes planned preventative maintenance
on around 150 dental units / chairs
each year
To assist in the upkeep of the
services and fabric of the portion of the building that the LDI is
responsible for. This includes liaison
with members of staff and the University Estates department to upgrade or
repair services and facilities
To provide occasional instruction
to dental staff and students at the LDI on the appropriate safe operation of
equipment, commensurate to the expertise and experience of the post holder.
Leeds
Dental Institute provides around 80,000 out-patient episodes each year
delivered by over 100 clinical staff and over 400 clinical students plus
other supporting services and associated staff.

4. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF
RESPONSIBILITY
Support the work of the Dental
Workshop in the effective and timely maintenance, repair, testing and
calibration of fixed and portable dental equipment.
Undertake Planned Preventative
Maintenance on selected items of equipment.
Carry out commissioning and
acceptance testing on new medical equipment.
To liaise with members of staff and
the University Estates Department to upgrade or repair services and
facilities.
Organise own work schedule to
ensure all allocated work is prioritised and completed in advance of agreed
deadlines.
Ensure the equipment used in the
Dental Workshop is in safe working order and by undertaking routine cleaning
and maintenance of workshop equipment when necessary.
To maintain and update records of
equipment maintenance on the appropriate equipment inventory/s including on
the Medical Physics Inventory database Equip
Identify and specify spare parts
and accessories to be ordered for own work and in the absence of or in
support of the Lead Technician to create purchase requisitions for required
products.
Maintain and develop skills and
knowledge necessary for the job by:
Completion of appropriate training
on a timely basis including all mandatory training and other essential
training as identified by the Lead Technician or Service Manager
Participation in regular appraisals
Attend appropriate departmental
meetings as required.
To provide occasional instruction
to dental staff and students at the LDI on the appropriate safe operation of
equipment, commensurate to the expertise and experience of the post holder
To follow all health & safety
policies, protocols and risk assessments relevant to the Dental Workshop and
to the department or work area in which Dental Engineering services are being
provided at any time.
Any other duties commensurate with
the grade.

7. INFECTION CONTROL
The
jobholder must comply at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS
Trust Infection Control policies, in particular by practising Universal
Infection Control Precautions. Hand hygiene must be performed before and
after contact with patients and their environment.
8. HEALTH AND SAFETY / RISK MANAGEMENT
All
staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and
improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service
users. This includes complying at all
times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health
and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed security and safer
working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident
Reporting system

jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for

jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
11. COMMUNICATION & WORKING
RELATIONSHIPS
The
post holder will be expected to establish, maintain and respect good working
relationships and communication networks with both internal and external
organisations, institutions and individuals with whom they come into contact,
including those associated with the specialty area and as appropriate within
the role. The post holder will be expected to represent themselves and the
service in a professional, courteous and respectful manner at all times.
12. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS
i) PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Some
tasks can require a high degree of manual dexterity and hand to eye
co-ordination
Moving
and handling of heavy or awkward equipment; typically may move equipment
weighing up to 15Kg two or more times a week, move equipment weighing 2 to 5
Kg several times a day. Heavier or awkward equipment such as suction motors
or dental chairs may occasionally need moving requiring help from colleagues.
Some
tasks may need to be performed in an awkward, cramped or confined body
position, potentially for 10 -15 minutes at a time. This may include kneeling
or lying down or reaching into an awkward space
ii) MENTAL EFFORT:
Some
tasks may require a high level of concentration due to a delicate or
intricate nature such as re-assembling a dental hand piece. Or due to a risk
of contact with electricity. This may occur daily and may be for 15-30
minutes duration
The
broad range of equipment being maintained by the team requires an in-depth
knowledge and understanding gained post qualification through manufacturers
training and on the job experience often backed up by referencing repair
manuals. There is a high need for continuous learning.
iii)
EMOTIONAL EFFORT:
Generally
emotional effort is very rare.
iv)
WORKING CONDITIONS:
a. Frequent regular use of a range of
potentially hazardous hand tools and instruments which may require careful
handling and use to prevent injury or harm
b. Regular use / handling of a range of
materials including adhesives, solvents, oils etc. Also chemicals such as
Oratol for water-line disinfection which can be harmful if inappropriately
handled
c. Also works on and handles a broad
range of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic equipment on a daily basis which
may pose a range of hazards including electricity, manual handling, finger
trapping, or exposure to contamination with body fluids including blood and
saliva.
All
risks are mitigated by strict Health and Safety procedures which can includes
the need to wear PPE including safety shoes, eye protection, dust masks,
gloves etc often for several hours each day. This prolonged use of PPE can be
restrictive making working conditions less comfortable.
